Bexleyheath, England (1978 – present)

Kate Bush (born Catherine Bush on 30 July 1958 in Bexleyheath, England, now part of Greater London) is an English known for her expressive three-octave voice, idiosyncratic and literary lyrics, and eclectic and meticulous musical and production style. She debuted in 1978 with the surprise hit “Wuthering Heights”, which was number one in the British music charts for four weeks.

Whilst learning the violin and piano at St. Joseph’s Convent Grammar, she caught the ear of Pink Floyd’s David Gilmour who funded some demos, ultimately leading to a deal with EMI (Pink Floyd’s ultimate record company through the progressive Harvest imprint) when she was sixteen. Over the next two years EMI allowed her — either to allow her to hone her talents or so she wouldn’t be offered a contract by another record company — to finish school without releasing any material. Bush’s first releases were in 1978 when she released the single Wuthering Heights (which went to number 1 in the UK, a first for a female singer/songwriter) followed by the album The Kick Inside.

Even from her earliest works, featuring piano as a primary instrument, Bush wove together many diverse influences, melding music, , and a wide range of and sources, producing a unique amalgam which has continued throughout her career. Later recordings have moved farther from a rock base, however, notably with the release of The Dreaming in 1982, where she experimented heavily with the then-new technology of sampling.

I remember the very first time i've listened ' Hounds of Love'. I was standing in a crowd bus, it was 22:00, i was tired... I was thinking "Oh, that's a cool album".... But when Ninth Wave started, the album started to grow and grow, when the instrumental section of 'Jig of Life' started, i was petrified, i was very impressed and frightened at the same time! Love at first listening!!!!

It may be her weakest compared to her other albums, but it's a good start in Kate's catalouge. The first five songs on HOL are excellent, so I don't see how anyone could find them boring. TSW is more boring, though.

I have to say The Kick Inside is the weakest of her first five albums

I didn't like Hounds Of Love at first, but now it's one of my favorites. I can see why you would think it's boring, though. The Kick Inside, The Dreaming, or Never For Ever is a good start.

I bought Hounds of Love a while ago and just listened to it last night. I expected to love it, but actually found it kind of boring. I'm determined to get into Kate Bush, though. Should I try any of her other albums before going back to Hounds?

kate lyrics are more into story telling. why kate is special is how well crafted her songs and production is. and how versatile and changing it's been considering shes been the only one writing it and producing it (without any outsider help) for almost 40 years.

i mean, my favourite lyricists in order are probably something like this: 1. aimee mann, 2. joni mitchell, 3. joanna newsom, 4. suzanne vega, 5. kirsty maccoll, 6. kate bush, 7. laurie anderson. if i was measuring the whole package along with musical production and merit, the list would be completely different. almost reversed, actually. funny.

you know, i wouldn't describe kate's lyrics as "simple" at all. they are certainly more minimalistic than a lot of other singer/songwriter's, though. i feel that kate's songwriting style is an example of saying a lot by not saying too much. by choosing not to cram songs with over-complicated semi-prose, she creates a much more malleable atmosphere than more rigidly descriptive and witty songwriters who rely on their skilful use of wordplay. kirsty maccoll had mastered the latter category before her untimely death while artists like alanis morrissette, ani difranco and even tori amos and fiona apple struggle to find the balance, as far as i'm concerned. i will concede that joanna newsom could be said to write lyrics like kate produces songs. brimming with detail and interesting asides. different? yes. better? it depends on your personal tastes.
