Swordfishtrombones is an album by American singer-songwriter Tom Waits, released in September 1983. It was the first album that Waits produced himself and is marked as such by a sense of artistic freedom that would increasingly characterize his later work.

Stylistically different from his previous LPs, Swordfishtrombones moves away from the piano and string orchestra arrangements of the late seventies replacing them instead with unusual instrumentation and a somewhat more abstract songwriting approach.

    @OcellatedGod That figures. This is where he rediscovered his inspiration after losing his way with that piece of shit Heartattack and Vine. He went on to make four of the best albums of his career beginning with this one and ending with Bone Machine. The Black Rider and Mule Variations were a little bit disappointing and Real Gone is uneven, but otherwise he's delivered nothing but quality since this album came out. Clean the shit out of your ears.
