Irvine, United Kingdom (1986 – present)

The Trash Can Sinatras are a band which formed in 1986 in Irvine, Scotland. The band consists of Francis Reader (vocals, guitar), Paul Livingston (guitar), John Douglas (guitar, vocals), Frank Divanna (bass), Stevie Mulhearn (keyboards) and Stephen Douglas (drums). The band has released five albums: “Cake” (1990), “I’ve Seen Everything” (1993), “A Happy Pocket” (1996), “Weightlifting” (2004) and “In the Music” (2010).

The Trashcan Sinatras were founded as a covers band. The band members knew each other from school or met through the club/pub music scene in Irvine. The band name was derived from a school music class, where students improvised on various ‘instruments’. After banging on some trash cans, someone mentioned Frank Sinatra and the band name was born. The original band members included Frank Reader (bass), Davy Hughes (guitar and vocals), George McDaid (guitar) and Paul Forde (drums). By late 1986/early 1987, the line-up had changed to include Paul Livingston (guitar), John Douglas (guitar) and Stephen Douglas (drums), along with Frank Reader moving to vocals and Davy Hughes to bass. While the band has included other members for short periods of time over the years, this is the line-up that would record the bulk of the Trashcan Sinatras’ music to date.

Oh man, I first heard Cake several years ago, and fell in love with it, before promptly forgetting about it. Well, now I've rediscovered it, and I definitely know what I'll be listening to all night tonight.

Certainly one of my all time favourites. Loved Cake but think the pinnacle was I've Seen Everything. I still regularly listen to this album - it takes me back to my early - mid twenties in an instant. Moody swirling tunes that have wrapped themselves around that era of my life. Unfortunately I don't think the later stuff ever captures that early magic. However, I keep buying their albums, just in case they pull it off again.

Usually when I listen to an obscure band, I know why they never got big. But these cats being unknown baffles me. Some of the finest pop music around.

I've always adored, loved them since the super early 90's! Cake became my official high school/college/late teens/20-something album. Followed them on their North American West Coast tour in 2004-05. We played TCS songs @ my wedding. I listened to TCS songs while I was in labor for my baby daughter earlier this year. Heck, I'll be listening to TCS on my deathbed! Lol. Love them!
