“Lily (My One and Only)” off of The Smashing Pumpkin’s fourth studio album Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness tells the voyeuristic tale of a man obsessed with a woman named Lily. The song begins innocuously enough, describing the narrator’s liking of Lily. As the song progresses, it becomes increasingly evident that this is not love, but rather an unhealthy, one-sided obsession. This is seen when the narrator describes sitting in a tree, watching Lily through her window and eventually being arrested for stalking. Nevertheless, his fondness for her persists with him being convinced that Lily loves him. Although not based directly on a true story, the lyrics were inspired from frontman Billy Corgan’s childhood. In a Deluxe 2012 reissue of Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness he stated that as a kid, he had a crush on a girl who lived in his neighborhood and would often spy on her.
