Tapes from room 3.
The Pier Group had been formed from the split of the original The Puma-Sutras around about 1995 maybe 1996. Originally featuring one Jacob Polly on vox this stuff is from the 2nd incarnation: Paddy Garrigan, Ben McCabe, Scott Morley and Richard Chamberlain but only a couple of songs. Every rehearsal for about a year the band recorded tapes of rehearsals with the intention of turning jams into songs which of course never happened. The tapes were dumped into the hands of Zero Friends Recordings and lay in a loft until last year and two or three tapes were picked at random and spliced. Then everything was thrown in the bin.
A couple of pieces stand alone. When The Pier Group mk2 played gigs there were never any jams, though a lot of the music was everyone playing over each other, cramming it in, and often involved improvised fills, and often all blotto but the drummer. The performances mostly bored or disgusted people, but some of the good ones were very ragged, out of tune and heavy with plenty of volume and a pissed up crowd. There was also a lot of hair and old suits. There were some good songs that have since disappeared and some not so good ones that have disappeared too so fair's fair. The loose jams and riffs work. Work!
