While reading A Chronicle of the Last Pagans by Pierre Chuvin, John Darnielle wrote one song a day for ten days. He recorded these songs on a boombox whose clickings had rendered it nearly unusable until he placed it on its side, when it would record with limited background noise. This is the first tape of this type by the Mountain Goats since 2002's All Hail West Texas, and while it is available digitally via the band's Bandcamp page, it was only released physically in a few limited-run cassette runs.
According to the band's Bandcamp, the tape was "Recorded March 16–25, 2020, Durham, North Carolina, utilizing the trusty Panasonic RX-FT500 & the Marantz PMD222."
