The Durutti Column, formed in 1978 is the ongoing band project of guitarist (and occasional pianist) Vini Reilly (born in Didsbury, Greater Manchester, August 1953), often accompanied by drummer Bruce Mitchell.

The basic idea behind Durutti Column’s music is to break with whatever structure supports the foundations of musical formalism, in order to try and create a kind of music which really can belong to everyone.

The Durutti Column partly derives its name from the struggle of revolutionary anarchist Buenaventura Durruti to liberate Spain during the bloody civil war of the 1930s. A legendary assassin and anarchist, he fueled a libertarian communist movement with lofty ideals and eventually led a formidable column of 6,000 men towards Zaragoza during the summer of 1936. His aim was to liberate the city, defeat Fascism and declare a free commune but his plan failed when the column became entrenched just outside the city. Later he was persuaded to go to Madrid with his men and take on Franco’s Moroccan militia. During this escapade he was shot in the back.

The second source for the title comes from the activities of the Situationists Internationale in Strasbourg in 1966. In a grand gesture of anarchism they papered the walls of the city with a comic strip titled “The Return of the Durutti Column”. (Note the change of spelling of Durruti’s name).

Did Vini create IDM with Obey The Time? You know, after he was done creating post-rock? It's not the solidest collection of work he released, but it remains a sentimental favourite. The beginning of The Warmest Rain alone is in my top 5 Durutti moments.

@marningside: check out his masterpiece Without Mercy, a two-part suite released in the 80s (though there are bonus tracks on the cd version now), and make sure to also get Vini Reilly which has the masterful "Otis" a precursor to Brother. also by all means get the debut album, Return of the Durutti Column, one of the best debuts ever.

Heard Durutti Column for the first time in Graffiti Records, Queen Street, Glasgow. Turned out it was The Return Of The Durutti Column they were playing. Been a fan since.

A Paean to Wilson is the first album of theirs that I've heard. It's very addictive. Any big fans have a suggestion for where to go next? I like their quiet, reflective side ('Brother' on the Paean album is beautiful).

When I was young my father took me with him to see The Durutti Column perform live. I feel so frustrated at the fact that I don't have any recognition of this gig. If only I was old enough at the time to maintain the memory of such an experience.
