Biography

Croydon, England (1976 – present)

The Damned are a group originally from Croydon, England, a suburb of London, who were formed in 1976. Despite being one of the definitive early punk bands they were also one of the most ambitious; with their later albums moving away from the breakneck garage sound of their debut and taking in elements from goth and psychedelia to prog and metal.

They are notable for being the first of the British punk bands to release a single, put out an album, and tour the United States. Their debut album, Damned Damned Damned, was released six months before The Sex Pistols’ debut, Never Mind The Bollocks.

The Damned have dissolved and reformed many times, with singer Dave Vanian remaining the sole constant. They have incorporated many styles in their music, most notably garage rock, psychedelic music, the British theatrical rock of Screaming Lord Sutch and The Sensational Alex Harvey Band, and New Romantic.

In addition to serving as inspiration for many of the young bands who created hardcore punk in the US, The Damned are also generally regarded as one of the founders of music.

Original members Dave Vanian (David Lett), Captain Sensible (Raymond Burns), and Rat Scabies (Chris Millar) were all members of the semi-legendary Masters of the Backside which included future Pretenders frontwoman Chrissie Hynde.

Worth every penny. See 'em if they come your way! [2] I just saw them last night at El Rey Theatre in LA. That was the very last day for them to play in California, according to Captain. So impressed. They briefly played Break On Through (Doors' cover) during the long interlude of Neat Neat Neat, which seemed to be a dedication to Ray Manzarek. Vanian was so fine and charismatic.

Just saw them tonight at the Sycuan Casino in El Cajon near San Diego. Pretty surreal to see punk rock at a casino. LOL. They played New Rose, Smash It Up, Eloise, I Just Can't Be Happy Today, Democracy, Grimly Fiendish, The Shadow Of Love, White Rabbit, Alone Again Or, Under The Floor Again, Nasty, and a bunch of others. Worth every penny. See 'em if they come your way!

@Karam they're all good. just go from oldest to newest. They change every now but they're always the Damned. Even Grave Disorder is way better than I expected.
