Biography

There have been two bands known as The Choir:

1) The Choir were a rock band in the mid-1960s from Cleveland Ohio, best known for the oft-covered song “It’s Cold Outside”. With the addition of singer Eric Carmen, they became The Raspberries in 1970.

2) The Choir (originally The Youth Choir) is an atmospheric rock band, led by Derri Daugherty on guitar and vocals, Steve Hindalong on drums — who also writes most of the band’s lyrics — as well as Tim Chandler on bass, Dan Michaels on lyricon, electric flute and saxophone and Marc Byrd on guitar, the latter of whom is a relatively recent addition to the band’s lineup. Originally formed in Southern California in the early 1980s, the band members moved to the Nashville, Tennessee area in the 1990s. Past members include bass guitarists Michael Sauerbrey, Robin Spurs, and Bill Batstone.

Each band member also has a depth of musical history outside of The Choir. Hindalong produced four successful City On a Hill albums, writing the well-known song “God of Wonders” with fellow band-mate Byrd. Daugherty has been a member of the Christian-alterna-pop-supergroup The Lost Dogs since 1991, and Hindalong recently joined that group. Chandler has been the bass player for years for Daniel Amos. Byrd was a member of Common Children, recorded with his wife Christine Glass as Glassbyrd, and is currently half of the post-rock duo Hammock.

@starbearer - the drummer has always been Steve Hindalong. One of my favorite drummers.

Their new album "The Loudest Sound Ever Heard" is set for release next month, and they've started selling pre-orders on their web site. Wish they had a vinyl LP available, but I've ordered a CD with some extra goodies. http://www.thechoir.net/index.php/main/store/

whoever played drums on the speckled bird album, phenomenal... remember watching him at Cornerstone Mainstage where I worked as a backline tech for about a decade. Anyway... a memorable drum performance.

I've been a fan since '84 as well. Through some circumstances I now can call myself a friend of Derri and Steve and I even see Dan occasionally. Lovely fellows all. Cover me is my favorite Choir song, Circle Slide my favorite Album. I also LOVE the Raspberries. Eric Carmen sure sucked (mostly) after he left them, though.

I've been a fan of the alternative Christian The Choir since 1991. They didn't really belong in that scene, which didn't seem to know what to do with them. I've never heard the 60s Choir, but I do like The Raspberries.

There's no way to "separate them out" as long as both bands are tagged with the same name in user's music files.

Circle Slide, Tear for Tear, About Love, Chase the Kangaroo. The Choir was the best alternative Christian band of the 90s!

@ stereo999 I believe the modern the Choir began as the Youth Choir and as those things go - their name was shortened to just well you know...

It's too bad Last Fm can't find a way to separate bands with the same name. I wonder if they could use the band name as a first layer and if there are two bands with the same name then use the lead singer or primary members as a point of differentiation between the two bands... Anyway smarter people than me are probably thinking about these things, so good night.

It's cold outside is by the 60's garage band The Choir. Can't really fault a christian band for using the same name I guess...
