Biography

The Raspberries (often known as just Raspberries) are an American band from Cleveland, Ohio. They had a run of huge success in the early music scene with their strident sound, which Allmusic later described as featuring “exquisitely crafted melodies and achingly gorgeous harmonies”. Best known for their hit “Go All The Way”, a track banned by the BBC due to its aggressively sexual lyrics, the group drew strong influence from The Beach Boys, the British Invasion era (The Beatles, The Who, The Hollies, and Small Faces), and the subculture. The members were also known for their clean-cut public image, with short-hair and matching suits, which brought them teenybopper attention as well as scorn from some media outlets as “uncool”. In both the U.S. and the U.K., the group helped pioneer the music style that took off after the group disbanded.

Though the band has achieved only cult success over the years, they have a loyal fan base and also a following among professional musicians such as Jack Bruce, Ringo Starr, Bruce Springsteen, and others. The group’s “classic” lineup consisted of Eric Carmen (vocalist/guitarist/bassist), Wally Bryson (guitarist), Jim Bonfanti (drummer), and Dave Smalley (guitarist/bassist). Their best known songs include the aforementioned “Go All The Way” as well as “Let’s Pretend”, “I Wanna Be With You”, “Tonight”, and “Overnight Sensation (Hit Record)”. Seminal producer Jimmy Ienner was responsible for all four of the Raspberries’ albums in the .

"Tonight" is now one of my new favorite tracks. I've had a great compilation for a couple years but I was disappointed the first few listens, except for "Go All the Way." Digging back through I've got a few new favorites. "Tonight" is the best.

"Live on Sunset Strip," the first live album and first new release in 33 years from the influential power-pop group Raspberries. Recorded live at the Sunset Strip’s famed House of Blues in Los Angeles, CA. by Grammy award winning engineer and producer Mark Linett on October 21st, 2005, the performance marks the triumphant return after 30 years of the band’s original line-up of Eric Carmen, Wally Bryson, Dave Smalley and Jim Bonfanti. Yes...it's pure power pop bliss...

I am amazed how under listened this band is. Compared to Big Star no one seems to care. I wonder why?

"so underrated it makes me sick" +1... Go All The Way is among the very best power pop songs ever to appear on vinyl and Tonight and Nobody Knows are damn good too.

I just realized their official name is Raspberries, without "The". I'm going to make the corrections in my library. I suggest everyone do the same, so we can get the right name on here.
