Listening to the Real Feel for the first time right now. two songs in, the first i got R.E.M. vibes from and the second one... kinda Neil Young at times. I had little idea what to expect but it seems aight. I really never write posts without listening many times but thats what I got so far.
I really like this album. Was pleasantly surprised.
And it's kind of depressing that people don't realize his impact on Pavement. I would argue that a lot of Pavement's experimental qualities come from SS, as much as I love SM.
and... while Im listening.... You always hear critics saying Pavement was aping The Fall and I never really thought it was that apparent. This latest Spiral Stairs album on the other hand has lots of Mark E Smith snarl.
Yeah... to beat this album up too much you would have to be really critical. These songs are "decent" at worst. I enjoyed the first PSoI album the most and this latest is "decent" but to say this guy purposely piggybacked fame his entire career would be stretching it.
pitchfork ripped him a new one. they are right though. as great as he was in pavement...he is quite a forgettable person and kind of uninteresting. Preston school of industry also is definitely one of the most laughably awful band names ever.
I don't mean to beat him over the head with a club but its obvious this is a guy that piggy backed an entire career/life off of the skill of sm
That Spiral Stairs is back is awesome. Hos post-pavement records with the Preston School of Industry are really underrated, especially in the shadow of Stephen Malkmus' more commercially successful solo work. I am really looking forward to this one.
