There are multiple artists under the name of Shining:
1) A Swedish / band.
2) A Norwegian / group.
3) Julian Beeston, an musician.
4) Early recordings from Illinois, USA.
5) A Polish band.
6) An 80s German band.
7) A French artist.

1) Shining is a Swedish / band formed in 1996 by Niklas Kvarforth in Halmstad, Sweden. The band’s music contains depressive undertones, which include personal and suicide-themed lyrics. Kvarforth is the main composer and vocalist of the band. He was only twelve years old when he started Shining. By the time Kvarforth was fourteen, Shining had released their first EP Submit to Selfdestruction (1998) on which he played guitars and bass. It was not until the band released their first album I: Within Deep Dark Chambers (2000) that Kvarforth became the band’s vocalist.

The band’s name does not refer to the book The Shining or the film based on it, but rather according to Kvarforth, it means “the path to enlightenment.”

Shining openly promotes suicide and self-harm in all its forms (e.g. drugs) in their lyrics. Kvarforth has claimed, with contentment, there have been some cases of people committing suicide at least partially under the influence of Shining’s music.

There are a lot more proggy elements to the new album than just a subtle jazz influence. Listen to that intro again. I don't get people's complaints. Apart from it being a bit short, it seems fine to me.

Does anyone know what happened with the documentary that was supposed to be released last year?

Interestingly enough the the Rammstein cover is strangely fitting, although his pronounciation qualifies as hilarious.

I fucking LOVE that they did a cover of my favourite comic-book-movie theme - Catwoman from Batman Returns (1992). But rest of the album is rather bland, nothing really stands out.

Poor attempt at being jazzy doesn't mean progressive. This is just an album to buy the next fix, and yes, I know what I'm talking about.

From my first listen of the new album I don't really get the complaints (other than that, as other people said, it's not black metal anymore), but there's been so much amazing new music released lately that it might be awhile before I revisit again. It sounds like Kvarforth is more interested in Shining being a progressive metal band than a black metal band now, because people weren't confused enough with the Norwegians also being progressive metal now. But given how much I love prog, I've got no complaints here.

He doesn't like what people turned DSBM into. No wonder he wants to distance himself from it.

There is no black metal in the new album, but it is a fucking wonderful, brilliant, excellent thing

The irony is that Niklas doesn't like the term Depressive/Suicidal black metal, since he finds it degrading on what message he's trying to convey.

I'm tired of seeing Sweden Shining as depressive black metal, cause it's not, you may say it's some extreme, exprerimental black metal, both bands are good, don't look at those stupid tags and listen to it. Btw new album is good.

New album is mediocre? Where? Shining evolved with each album they recorded. Of course, their latest work, especially their new album is not pure DSBM like in the old days... On "IX" are huge progressive elements which remind me on Bands like Obscura or Dark Fortress. So.. for me their music works, if you don't like it it's okay.. but where is their music mediocre?
