Biography

Springfield MA, United States (1996 – present)

Shadows Fall formed in 1996 in Springfield, Massachusetts and rose up as a prominent member of the bustling Massachusetts metal and hardcore scene that has recently produced bands such as Killswitch Engage, All That Remains, and Unearth. Guitar duo Jonathan Donais and Matt Bachand got together in ‘96 and had the original lineup complete within a year. These members were vocalist Philip Labonte, now with All That Remains, bass player Paul Romanko, and drummer David Germain.

Music from Shadows Fall’s early days can be compared to metal legends such as Metallica, Slayer, and Iron Maiden as their songs relied heavily on the start-stop tempo changes made famous by the aforementioned bands. The band also had a lot of death metal influences at the time. They began touring the New England area and eventually were able to obtain open slots for acclaimed metal bands such as Fear Factory and Cannibal Corpse. In 1997, the band released its first full length album, Somber Eyes to the Sky, on Matt Bachand’s own Lifeless Records. This however, would be the only album the band would record with Labonte. He was replaced by current vocalist Brian Fair in 1998.

The band signed with the prominent underground metal record label, Century Media in 1999. Early during the following year, Shadows Fall released Of One Blood. Their sound was a still mixture of thrash, death metal, and hardcore with a little more hard rock influence thrown in due to the entry of the Brian Fair.

Don't listen to the elitists when they tell you "x" genre sucks and only "y" genre(s) are good. They're losers, who want to make naive (not experienced) people feel bad about themselves, and attention. The new bands, a lot of people like them and a lot of people don't. Ask yourselves though, is it normal to go into every comment section of those 'poser' bands and rage how these bands suck and their fans are faggots for listening to them? Would a person who's secure in him or herself do that? Another thing is, these people don't really want you to change. They don't care if after reading their spam you will listen to that Malevolent Creation record, or to the Mayhem demo recorded with a potato. They couldn't care less. They just want to make other people feel like shit or get attention from others to feel better after their shitty day. They complain about the herd mentality of new fans of metal, but the same thing applies to them. /Endrant.

Today I started to listen to these guys again. Before today I had no scrobbless of these guys on my last fm account but they were one of the very first metal bands I got into, they were among the first to get me into the genre. I stopped listening to them in 2008 just as my 'elitist' phase started, when 99% of the stuff I was listening to were old school thrash metal bands. Last year I came to conclusion that being elitist didn't give me much benefits at all and I still could listen to all the KoRns, SlipKnots and SOADs (which were also among first rock bands i listened to) and not throw up, so I got back to listening to all these bands I dug back when I was a teen. I'd like to advise young fans; if you like a modern metal band (or modern rock band) very much and then find true metal or what not, by all means do listen to that and expand ur horizons but don't abandon your first major metal fascinations, you'll be missing them later on in your life.

I love the riffs, shredding solos, and driving precise drumming. Sure, they aren't the most br00tal or technical metal band ever, and that is just fine with me. The overall driving consistent sound is rocking. Great energy in their live performances too.

It's no surprise The Light That Blinds is the most listened to track, what with it being on Guitar Hero 2.

I moreso meant thrash metal influences...I consider this band a merge of multiple styles, and thrash metal seems to be the best thing I can neatly classy them as.

It'd be cool if they kept the acoustic parts from Fear Will Drag You Down and mixed it with Fire From the Sky.

And if you aren't joking, I just want to say you "true metal" types are the hipsters of metal. Like nu metal or not (I still think that term should only apply to the bands that used rap elements,) it is still metal. As far as core genres go, I don't know what I listen to is core, I don't give a shit about labelling my collection in 50+ genres.
