San Diego, United States (1998 – present)

Pinback are an indie rock band from San Diego, California, currently signed to Temporary Residence Ltd.. The band was formed in 1998 by singers, songwriters and multi-instrumentalists Armistead Burwell Smith IV (also known as Zach Smith, a former member of Three Mile Pilot and the primary member of Systems Officer) and Rob Crow formerly of Thingy, Heavy Vegetable, and Goblin Cock. First acquainted as roommates, they began making recordings in their home, playing along to pre-recorded beats. Today, the band has 2 drummers that switch off and on, Chris Prescott, and Tom Zinser. Other members of Pinback past and present are: Terrin Durfey, Eric Hoversten, Ryan Bromley, Cameron Jones, Kenseth Thideau, Gabriel Voiles, Dmitri Dziensuwski, Donny Van Zandt, and Thatcher Orbitachi.

Zach Smith is noted for his unique style of bass-playing, as he combines strumming (the most prevalent of his techniques), popping, and slapping. He uses an Alembic Stanley Clarke bass and is currently working on a solo project entitled Systems Officer. Smith tends to write most of the instrumental parts of Pinback’s songs while Rob Crow’s forte is lyric-writing. At their concerts, they are known for giving away limited edition tour EPs. Both feel strongly about keeping their music in the independent scene, free from excessive media attention and corporate pressures that could affect the band’s original sound.

shadrach_451 either i never would've heard their music or i pirate it. If he and his band can't think of a way to make money with the internet it's their problem. The game is changing, not my fault, or anyone's

Listening to Autumn of the Seraphs. Reading about the story of Larry Walters that inspired the song Walters. I wish Rob Crow the best of luck. He's left some amazing music behind.

Nice, placebo_molko, very apt comment to have be the last thing to be said here at the moment when Rob Crow announces that he's quitting music because it's not financially sustainable for supporting his family. I feel like there is something darkly poetic about that.

Can someone please send me tripoli. It's wrong both in "this is a pinback cd" and the tripoli EP. I wonder what was going thru that guy's head to make that.

They were in Dallas last month. I missed it. I hate myself for it. Talby, Bbtone, Soaked, Boo and Crutch are in my top 5.

it was so sweet to see these boys play a couple of weeks ago in dallas. i bought rob crow a whiskey on the rocks, and forgave my extreme awkwardness andhe was quite lovely. i've always loved them, but damn. i just stand in awe of their musicianship. ever since the show, i've fallen into this deep obsession of listening to them more and more. fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuck. this is music.

Oh man, guys. Guys. Don't miss "Grey Machine". It's hidden at the end of the Offcell EP, and it's possibly Pinback's magnum opus. 11 minutes of masterful music. I'm a huge Pinback fan, and some how I almost missed out on this song. Don't mess up guys. This is important.
