Biography

San Diego, United States (1998 – present)

Pinback are an indie rock band from San Diego, California, currently signed to Temporary Residence Ltd.. The band was formed in 1998 by singers, songwriters and multi-instrumentalists Armistead Burwell Smith IV (also known as Zach Smith, a former member of Three Mile Pilot and the primary member of Systems Officer) and Rob Crow formerly of Thingy, Heavy Vegetable, and Goblin Cock. First acquainted as roommates, they began making recordings in their home, playing along to pre-recorded beats. Today, the band has 2 drummers that switch off and on, Chris Prescott, and Tom Zinser. Other members of Pinback past and present are: Terrin Durfey, Eric Hoversten, Ryan Bromley, Cameron Jones, Kenseth Thideau, Gabriel Voiles, Dmitri Dziensuwski, Donny Van Zandt, and Thatcher Orbitachi.

Zach Smith is noted for his unique style of bass-playing, as he combines strumming (the most prevalent of his techniques), popping, and slapping. He uses an Alembic Stanley Clarke bass and is currently working on a solo project entitled Systems Officer. Smith tends to write most of the instrumental parts of Pinback’s songs while Rob Crow’s forte is lyric-writing. At their concerts, they are known for giving away limited edition tour EPs. Both feel strongly about keeping their music in the independent scene, free from excessive media attention and corporate pressures that could affect the band’s original sound.

one of the few bands that is consistent. Information Retrieved is so much more than any of us could ask for from a band that produces as many good songs on 1 album as most bands do in a career

all of their albums are pretty excellent imo.. the first two + nautical antiques have so much personality what with the tinny drum machines, soft vocals, quirky lyrics, insane bass work. they sound a lot more like a fully fledged band now, theyve kind of abandoned the two dudes jamming to roland drum machines in a bedroom aesthetic, and i think theyve made the transition just fine. information retrieved is a great record, i actually think its a better piece of work than autumn of the seraphs, so imo theyre still going as strong as ever.

My most played Pinback track though (and not necessarily my favorite) is Kylie, a B-side from Seraphs. It's ridiculously infectious. Perfect summer track.

Autumn of the Seraphs has plenty of gems. How about Walters? Devil You Know? Easily two of Pinback's best tracks.

All of their albums are amazing with the exception of their debut. That's simply good. Nothing will ever top Summer in Abaddon though.

play that one later. they've launched their antenna claws. called in a favor while you're choking on their tentacles. you're falling asleep. don't look behind the curtain. you're falling asleep. look in the spinning line.

New album is pretty sweet. The song "Drawstring" goes right up there with some of their best work. Thanks for the great music. :-)

Blue Screen Life > Summer in Abaddon > Autumn of the Seraphs > Information Retrieved [2]. Blue Screen Life is still the best thing they've done til this day. Information Retrieved just ain't Pinback.

@Jerman24, but I agree about Sherman. It's surely the weakest on the album.
