Phish is a popular American rock band most noted for its extended improvisations, elongated song compositions and the varied genres represented in their song repertoire. The band was formed in 1983 in Burlington, Vermont, United States where they all attended college. The band’s lineup consists of Trey Anastasio (guitar, vocals), Page McConnell (keyboards, vocals), Mike “Cactus” Gordon (bass, vocals) and Jon Fishman (drums, vocals, vacuum cleaner). The band went on hiatus in 2000, but returned in 2002 only to split for what seemed for good in 2004. However, on September 30, 2008, the band announced, via their website, that they would reunite for three shows on March 6th, 7th and 8th, 2009 at the Hampton Colosseum. Later the band announced a summer tour for June of 2009 beginning with a night at Fenway Park and later added more dates in late July and August, featuring 4 nights at Red Rocks to begin the tour.
Although the group received little radio play or MTV exposure, Phish developed a large following by word of mouth. Phish’s music has elements of many genres including jazz, bluegrass, country, heavy metal, reggae, folk, rock, ska, pop, blues, progressive rock, show tunes, classical, acoustic, barber shop quartet and calypso. The band performed 226 originals (of the 234 they penned) and 383 covers for a total of 609 songs.
While often compared to the Grateful Dead, Phish finds their roots in jazz as opposed to the Dead who were more influenced by American Blues.

Yeah, I always think that's ignorant for people to say Phish doesn't have good studio work. Because they really do. My favorite studio Phish is Picture of Nectar so I always recommend everyone to start there first. If you are just getting into Phish don't start with The Man Who Stepped Into Yesterday, that's foolish.

Plus Phish is pretty taper-friendly and there are plenty of places online to get audience recordings for free, and the band themselves sell mastered soundboard recordings of pretty much every note they've played together in public from their website. So there's plenty of really great stuff out there to be had relatively cheap! There's really no reason to ever listen to a Phish studio album.

You can get aud recordings of phish shows at bt.etree.org for free and legally - use bittorrent to download. All of festival 8 including the exile halloween set is there - from several sources. Or you can buy mastered soundboard recordings from livephish.com Some of the aud recordings have amazing sound quality so if you want free that's the way to go.
