There are 3 artists going by the name Peasant - an American singer/songwriter, a South African hardcore band and a Texan noise artist.

1. Peasant is the work of Damien DeRose, a songwriter, singer, and producer. Starting off in 2005 at the age of 18 as a DIY specialist, the first album, “Fear Not, Distant Lover”, was home-recorded and self-released and established his reputation as a solid independent artist. The record made the rounds of a number of excited blogs and eventually led to his being signed and a number of tours in the US and Europe,

His first “official” label release came in 2008. “On the Ground” was met with impressive critical acclaim and the record was mined by the silver screen, with multiple songs being used on hit T.V. shows including Bones and The United States of Tara. The record was widely considered a fitting and tasteful follow up to Fear Not Distant Lover and saw DeRose rise to a new level of recognition for his music, playing shows with a number of indie luminaries including Cursive, Dr. Dog, Horse Feathers, Dan Mangan, Delta Spirit, Rocky Votolato, Sharon Van Etten and others.

In 2010, Peasant released his 3rd album, “Shady Retreat”, which was entirely recorded on his own and clearly was a bit more experimental and lo-fi than “On the Ground” was. He also continued to tour extensively in Europe and the U.S. during 2010 to support the record.

Peasant is currently writing and producing a new album in his shared studio/house on Shady Retreat Road in Bucks County, PA. For a change, the record will feature a number of other musicians for almost the entire album.
