The lyrics depict those events from the perspective of one of his parents' friends who doesn’t want to lose his best friend. While on a “Records in my Life” interview, Neil stated the original title for the song was “Brian’s Song” but was changed because of the movie “Brian’s Song.” In the same interview, Chris revealed that the song was written while the band was on acid.
