About This Track

“Heartbreaker” is a song recorded by Pat Benatar on her 1979 album In the Heat of the Night. It was written and composed by Geoff Gill and Clint Wade. According to the Heartbreaker Songfacts, since the song’s writers were British, the lyrics of the song were originally full of UK English expressions and colloquialisms that would be foreign to the American ear. So the publisher gave it to Benatar to clear up and Benatar rewrote it.
The song reached #23 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100.

Pat Benatar and “Heartbreaker” appeared in a television ad (along with Cheyenne Kimball) for Candie’s Clothing Company. This song was also performed by Benatar and her band in the Charmed episode “Lucky Charmed”. While not confirmed as an influence, the lyrics of “Heartbreaker” are similar to the song of the same title by the Crystals with “Heartbreaker, dream-maker, love-taker” being strikingly alike to the Crystal’s lyric “Heartbreaker, hip shaker, troublemaker”.
