Loudon Wainwright III (born September 5, 1946 in Chapel Hill, North Carolina) is an American songwriter, folk singer, humorist, and actor. He is the father of Rufus Wainwright and Martha Wainwright.
A graduate of St. Andrew’s School, Wainwright is best known for a 1972 novelty song hit Dead Skunk (In The Middle Of The Road), with pianist Teddy Wender and for playing Captain Spalding (the “singing surgeon”) on three episodes of the American television show M*A*S*H in its third season (1974-1975), but his musical reputation is much deeper. Using a witty, self-mocking style, Wainwright has recorded over twenty albums on eleven different labels. Two of his albums have been nominated for Grammy awards.
He is also a regular actor in Judd Apatow movies. His biggest role was playing the father on Judd’s show, Undeclared.

Love Loudon, who I think is under-rated - whereas Rufus' voice isn't nearly as good as he thinks it is (doesn't compare with Jeff Buckley for example).

Loudon's output after the first three albums has NOT been "pretty poor apart from odd tracks". If that were true then he wouldn't be all that great, he'd just be some has-been who was only good in his 20's, wouldn't he? Does that really sound like Loudon to you?! And it's the odd tracks over the years that have ALWAYS stood out, including those first three releases, which is true of pretty much every other artist, isn't it? Even the greatest albums ever recorded generally have a few standout tunes, so do we level the same comment at those artists, too? It's madness, I tell you!

Been listening to Loudon's music since he was singing lines like, "29 years now I've been alive..." and it never gets old. In fact, he seems more pertinent than ever. He's the textbook for how one can incorporate personal material into their songwriting. On this basis alone, I think his music will last forever as a kind of document of one man's life (and the time he lived in).

1st three albums were undoubtedly the best lyrically followed by final exam which was good a lot of stuff since has been pretty poor apart from odd tracks I have seen him in concert many times over the years and hes been superb but his new album of reworked old tracks like motel blues is absolutely dreadful unfortunately its probably the version on here
