this song is disturbing and disgusting. Only Linda could make it tolerable.

Agreed, C_Bone -- heard the Pogues's version on "Red Hot And Blue" (a compilation of Cole Porter songs by modern artists) and that was a damn good cover as well.

As she got older Linda sang more ballads. And yes, her voice is well suited to this type of song.

Some people might hate me for saying this...but listening to a song like this convinces me that Ronstadt's voice was wasted on rock. You don't necessarily need a legitimate voice in order to sing rock...but if you do if you want to sing Cole Porter!

Oh my, I have not heard this for years, years. I remember hearing it as a youngster, I am know 60 plus. Never affected me though, thought it a sad song. But you have to keep the upper lip stiff.

I have always found this lovely song rather sick. It was written at the time when lynchings were a very real phenomenon. The thought that some society dame would suffer that fate was not just silly but insensitive. I prefer a Porter song such as "Love for sale" which is a bleak song about prostitution (and is also brilliant).
