John Mellencamp (born 7 October 1951 in Seymour, Indiana) is an American , known for a long and successful recording and performing career highlighted by a series of 19 hits, including “Jack & Diane”, and by his role in the Farm Aid charity event. Mellencamp currently lives in Bloomington, Indiana.

John’s first record released was under the stage name “Johnny Cougar” at the behest of Tony DeFries, his first manager. Mellencamp claims it was against his knowledge and will, and he hated the name. A few years later in 1982, he made his break through with the album “American Fool” which includes the hit singles “Hurts So Good” and “Jack and Diane” under the stage name “John Cougar”. With 1983’s “Uh-Huh” album, he added back his real last name to become known as “John Cougar Mellencamp.” By 1987’s “The Lonesome Jubilee” he dropped the “Cougar” moniker altogether, and has been known henceforth as “John Mellencamp.”

Mellencamp has always been socially and politically active and supported the “Vote for Change” Tour in 2004 opposing the policies of President George W. Bush. Mellencamp is a devout evangelical Christian and strongly believes in non-violence; he has spoken about his beliefs frequently in interviews.

Thank you, John. Thanks very much for giving me the greatest memories of my life through your incredible music. I saw you live on May 1st and loved the show. Jackie Brown still brings me to tears each time I hear it.

I was actually born about 5 minutes from where he lives right now. Also, my grandma lives where he originally lived. My pops always dug him, had all his records. Scarecrow is amazing, as well as American Fool.

Spank! I love this tune! I used to live in a small town! 26 years and really I want to go back! At the same time I love San Diego. Toss up! :-)

The thing you gotta remember about these charts is that any band who has any type of Christmas affiliated song will see their charts freak in the month of December. See Low , Elvis Presley, Casiotone for the Painfully Alone - the song charts are gone now but you can still see it in the "recent listeners trend".

First record I ever bought was "American Fool" way back in 1982 or 83. I took that thing home and spun the hell out of it.

@Lord_Kur: even if I listened to a couple 1000 times it would not be number one. I just find it silly that his rendition of I saw mommy kissing santa claus and cherry bomb are ranked in front the authority song. I mean really?

just listen to it a couple thousand times and make it number 1. sheesh, why do people bitch about song ranks? why would it matter?

20th June 1978. City Hall, Newcastle Upon Tyne, England. I was there to see Thin Lizzy on their Live and Dangerous tour. During the evening I was treated to what is still the best "support" band I have ever seen, Johnny Cougar. Bought "A Biography" the following day.

"Indiana's answer to Springsteen" stopped being sufficient praise for this man around 1989. He's grow into a singluar voice for regular folks and a chronicler of life and hard times in the Farm Belt. Plus, the guy can really rock!
