ReverseCard
Hello, this is ReverseCard from 1st period AP Lang. Today I will be arguing why DUCKWORTH. by Kendrick Lamar is the greatest storytelling song of all time. Now, I would recommend listening to the song if you are not already familiar with it before I give my reasons, but if for whatever reason you decide not to, I’ll be describing the contents of the song in detail, so it shouldn’t make a big difference. The song can be found on Kendrick’s fourth studio album entitled DAMN. as the final track on the standard edition of the album which was released through the record label Top Dawg Entertainment that Kendrick has historically been signed to since 2005. I have gleaned that this album is easily one of the most celebrated bodies of work in the last 15 years. The album also would help his career as, before release, right-wing networks such as FOX News were attempting to tear him down with ridiculous libel of Kendrick’s music inciting violence.

Now, beginning with the instrumental, producer 9th Wonder utilizes not one, not two, but five samples to create a lush background with multiple beat switches. However, if the lyrics were not as captivating as the beat, the song would be meretricious and quickly forgotten. This would not end up being the case as his consummate bars continued to be studied today and are the unlikely star of his track that already has a great base with its instrumental. At just over 4 minutes, Kendrick recites the story without getting scanty or turgid with details. He recites the story as it is without anything extra excluding his catchy and seamlessly intricate rhyme schemes. The song opens with the wise words: “It was always me vs the world. Until I found it’s me vs me.” Kendrick is not taking the victim card here, instead placing all of the struggles of wickedness and weakness that he raps about in prior tracks on the album onto himself mentally instead of society.
