"If you define 'niggers' as someone whose lifestyle is defined by others, whose opportunities are defined by others, whose role in society are defined by others, then Good News! You don't have to be black to be a 'nigger' in this society. Most of the people in America are 'niggers'. - Ron Dellums (Co-Founder and Chairman of The Congressional Black Caucus. US Congressman 1971-1998)

Can all the people shouting 'racist' not realise that John was actually the very opposite and was trying to make people aware of racism (and sexism) in a time when both were rife? Look at the lyrics; it is clearly an anti-sexist/racist song. It is supposed to be shocking because he wants a response and he wants change. He was by no means a Saint but it's quite clear that he strove for a more egalitarian society.

he might have had good intentions but he still managed to be racist through his ignorance. Black women are women too, and they are affected both by racism and by sexism. Black men have been lynched and abused due to the perceived threat they pose to "pure" innocent white women - white women are certainly not dealt the role of the n-word in that dynamic, if you know what I mean. The song expresses a lot of true things about the plight of women, I have no issue with those, but it's simply ignorant and wrong to think you can draw a simple parallel between sexism and racism as if the two weren't intertwined. And if he was just using it to "shock" people into paying attention, that's really degrading. The problem of racism shouldn't be reduced to a tool to talk about something else.

"but he still managed to be racist through his ignorance" In your opinion. He was simply stating that, whatever community of minority group you belong, women is still generally treated as inferior. That was his point as he clearly stated on an interview in the Dick Cavett Show (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S5lMxWWK218)

What are you all going mad for? I haven't seen anyone call John a racist. Anyway, Martin Luther King okayed the song, and John used to hang around with Bobby Seale, great man and leader of the Black Panthers at the time. All power to the people!

It's totally not a fucking racist song! John Lennon used the word ''nigger'' just to proved that women's social status was as same as the black people's, discriminated and unrespected. Some foolish critics twist the truth just because of a word, that was absolutely foolish. And some people are fucking weird. They never try to find the truth by themselves, but jsut listen to the authority or the main stream of public opinions.

Lennon was controversial, but he was a powerful artists, in the most successful band in music history,, and he had the balls to write a song like this, with the help of his feminist wife Yoko Ono. "Nigger" will always be a hurtful and controversial word, and it shouldn't be desensitized either. But in the context of this song- all of the hurt- all of the nastiness attached to that word, makes the statement John and Yoko is making about women inequality that much more powerful.
