Biography

John Denver (December 31, 1943 – October 12, 1997) was born with the name Henry John Deutschendorf Jr. in Roswell, N.M. One of America’s most popular performers in the ’70s, Denver’s rise to fame began when he was “discovered” in a Los Angeles nightclub. He initially joined the Back Porch Majority, a nursery group for the renowned New Christy Minstrels, but, tiring of his role there, he left for The Chad Mitchell Trio where he forged a reputation as a talented songwriter. With the departure of the last original member, the Mitchell Trio became known as Denver, Boise and Johnson, but their brief lifespan ended when Denver embarked on a solo career in 1969. One of his compositions, “Leaving On A Jet Plane,” provided an international hit for Peter, Paul and Mary.

Subsequent releases garnered some attention, but it was not until the 1971 release of Poems, Prayers & Promises that the singer enjoyed popular acclaim with “Take Me Home, Country Roads.” It marked the first of six gold singles. Following the successes of “Sunshine On My Shoulders” and “Annie’s Song,” Denver made regular appearances on the country charts in 1974 and 1975 with the No. 1 hits “Back Home Again,” “Thank God I’m A Country Boy” and “I’m Sorry.” In 1975, he was awarded the CMA award for entertainer of the year, which prompted Charlie Rich to ignite the envelope revealing him as the winner.

Thanks for the information. I actually would enjoy seeing such a show as a consolation to never having had the chance to see him in concert.

John was a very talented singer and song writer who sang from the heart about the things in his life that deeply touched him. Sadly he was taken away from us much too soon. I wish to God that he had checked the fuel tanks on that plane before taking off in that joke of a plane . And because he carelessly did not, it cost him his life. What a horrible tragedy. You would never get me to go up in one of those :"experimental planes" Half of the ones that have been made have crashed and killed the people that were flying them, they are just plain dangerous. They are meant to look at and to learn from, NOT to fly and anyone who does get up in one is taking their life in their very hands and taking the chance of getting killed the way John did. I cant even imagine what John felt when his plane smashed straight down into the rocks full force. His funeral was held on my Birthday - October 17,1997, the same year that my dad died from a cancer brain tumor. Dad & John - RIP

I was looking through my parents' vinyl collection the other day, and I noticed some records of John Denver. Now, as I listen to his music, I can see why they owned these records. My parents always joke around saying that I know more music of their youth than they do themselves! :-D
