Biography

San Francisco, United States (1992 – 2007)

With frontman Lance Hahn always at its core, J Church began in San Francisco in 1992. The original lineup was completed by bassist Gardner Maxam (who was in The Sharx, and played with Lance in his previous band, Cringer) and drummer Aaron Olson.

The group was named for the San Francisco Muni Metro line that Hahn took down Church Street to work, as well as to band practice in the the early days. Through the years, Lance was joined by a vast array of musicians in an ever-evolving J Church lineup.

Lance Hahn was also a punk rock history writer, writing many pieces for Maximum Rock ‘n’ Roll, the San Francisco music zine. Additionally, he also found time to run Honey Bear Records and work on a book compiling various writings on anarcho-punk bands. Lance Hahn passed away on October 21, 2007, aged 40, after falling into a coma nine days earlier due to complications from kidney dialysis.

J Church are one of those bands that I never think to listen to, but when I see one of their albums I put it on and listen to it for hours on repeat. Beautiful honest songs.

There's something addicting about this band, and I love it. It's criminal how few listeners they have.

I have been a long time fan.. Had no idea that Lance passed until just now. J Church was one of my favorite bands growing up. Their music got me through some of the toughest times in my life. I talked to Lance a couple times after shows, and he was always really down to earth, and genuinely enjoyed talking to the kids. "That's the thought that I'll keep"

I've uploaded two photos of Lance that are on the j church site.. if you want to, vote them. i'm really sad thinking of him being here no more, it's really really sad. it's also sad and upsetting seeing that they are so poor known/listened. i don't wanna talk about stupid charts things, but hey.. 5000 listeners?! they were one of the best bands of the entire 90s, and the last two records are still amazing. really amazing. i hope there's a lot more people listening to their records out of this site.
