Biography

(1999 – 2006)

Handsome Boy Modeling School were Prince Paul (best-known for his work with De La Soul and Stetsasonic) and Dan Nakamura (a.k.a. Dan The Automator), hugely successful producers in their own right. They released two CDs in total: So…How’s Your Girl? in 1999 and White People in 2004, collaborating with a mix of diverse artists, ranging from hip-hop heavyweights Del Tha Funkee Homosapien and RZA through to The Mars Volta and indie-darling Cat Power. Unfortunately it looks as though they won’t be producing any more now that Prince Paul has left the group in 2006 over disputes with Dan.

This project was way more influential to underground hip hop than some people give it credit for - El-P didn't start using his trademark hard electronic beats until after his collaboration with Alec Empire on the first Handsome Boy record. So in a weird indirect way, HBMS helped birth the Def Jux sound.

@lecube After seeing the comment below mine, I was thinking the exact same thing. They got me laughing out loud at work, even though I've heard them dozens of times.

They're probably one of the only groups who have skits on their albums that are legitimately hilarious. 'Outro' on White People gets me every time.

It makes me sad to know i'll never hear any new material from these guys. But what they did manage to create in the time they were together was just gold!

v I couldn't agree more. I am so sad that they had some disputes and went their seperate ways. It could be so more epic but I appreciate the albums more this way!

The promotional video is hilarious. Though I'm a bit saddened that they only released two albums.

Only heard of them because of Jamie Cullum's work with them (Greatest Mistake) but will try to listen to more of their songs.
