Biography

Foxygen is an American indie rock duo originally formed in Westlake Village, California in 2005 by Jonathan Rado and Sam France, “high school kids obsessed with the Brian Jonestown Massacre

After their formation in 2005, the band played wildly experimental music, which featured many influences from 60s psychedelia and avant-garde. They self-released many EPs between 2007 and 2011, only a few of which are still available. In early 2011, they were ‘discovered’ by famed producer Richard Swift, with whom they recorded their Take the Kids Off Broadway EP, which was also self-released at some point in mid-2011. The group were later signed on to Jagjaguwar Records. Their first studio album, Take the Kids Off Broadway, was released by Jagjaguwar on July 24, 2012. On January 22, 2013, Jagjaguwar will release Foxygen’s second album, We Are the 21st Century Ambassadors of Peace & Magic. This album was produced by Richard Swift and recorded at his National Freedom studio earlier this year. “Shuggie,” the first single from the record, was released on October 4, 2012

V Spot on! I think anyone who slams this band for being reductive and unoriginal completely misses the point. If Foxygen love the 60s and 70s so much, why shouldn't they be allowed to record music like that in 2013? There's no rule that every new release has to bring something new to the table. Many negative reviews of this album are so stuck up and humourless, it makes you wonder whether those writers even once laid back and enjoyed the music. There are some wonderful (and original) tunes on there. Some music simply shouldn't be overanalysed.

sit down tonight, revamp your favorite classic and try to make it this technically authentic. hopefully you won't be so pretentious when you're done. foxygen simply deserves an applause and a firm nod to the 60's and 70's, that's it. it's really about as deep as a puddle to say anything otherwise considering the blatantly obvious feel that they strive for and recorded to sound. to say their aura is underivative is foolish and obviously agreed upon. yet to say their songs are holding too tight to past memories is just plain funny. it's almost as though you're saying bands or artists in a specific genre or even time period need to be more genuine because of too many similaritys in their sound. what a boring wasteful argument.

Foxygen are pleasant enough to listen to, but I just can't get over how much every song sounds like a song that already exists. I know a lot of musicians borrow from other musicians, but when you're ripping off such obvious melodies as "Mambo Sun", "Only A Northern Song" and "Suspicious Minds", it's kind of hard not to hear the original every time you hear the song. I'm all for 60's and 70's inspired music but I feel like this is too much somehow. Sure, their music is catchy and they do their thing well but they're honestly not bringing anything new to the table. They just sound like a cover band that decided to write their own songs.

I like 'We are the 21st.....' but who gives a fuck if it sounds like its from a different era? All modern bands have their influences, right?

I like the new album, but live......... well having seen hundreds of shows over the years, it was one of the weakest live performances I have ever seen.

huh? it's foxygen who are preaching this 'history lesson' -- they do exactly what other bands from the past have done except in a convoluted insincere way. my age or the fact i like lil wayne has nothing to do with anything thank you. here's a funny article that articulates my feelings well: http://noisey.vice.com/blog/heres-why-foxygen-sucks

A 19 year old boy that listens to Lil Wayne shouldn't be preaching a "History Lesson."

This is quite a bit more catchy and layered than a "History Lesson."

Just because you don't like it, that doesn't give you an excuse to be rude, derek. You need to apologize for what you said.

sucks. in an ideal world we would be supporting music that pushes new boundaries, not this history lesson bullshit.
