Biography

Vienna, Austria

Christian Fennesz (born 25 December 1962) is an Austrian guitarist active in electronic music, often credited on albums simply as Fennesz.

Fennesz uses guitar[1] and notebook computers to make multilayered compositions that blend melody and conventional musical instruments with harsh, irregular glitch-influenced sounds and washes of white noise. He lives and works in Vienna, Austria.

Christian Fennesz’s trademark sound combines guitar playing with digital techniques like granular synthesis. This style has been described as “Rock meets PowerBook”.

His oeuvre is far broader though - he’s been at the forefront of digital music for many years now. Hotel Paral.lel won the Prix Ars Electronica Award of Distinction for Digital Musics in 1999 along with Pita’s Seven Tons For Free.

At the frontier of contemporary music is Fennesz: a meticulous laptop conceptualist who weaves tangible melodies and glowing guitars through dense, symphonic electronica. Fennesz uses guitar and computer to create shimmering, swirling electronic sound of enormous range and complex musicality. “Imagine the electric guitar severed from cliché and all of its physical limitations, shaping a bold new musical language.” - (City Newspaper, USA).

Christian Fennesz is known from his own particular musical world as well as his impeccable work in creating beautiful compositions for guitar.

I thought I'd throw my 2 cents in. Bécs is just great. I wanted to play it for my students today. I don't quite know how to express how good Liminality is, but it really seems like he's been working since Endless Summer to reach that sound/mood.

Fennesz makes fennesz music so by default every album sounds the same, he doesn't sound like anyone else.

according to recent interviews Fennesz wanted Bécs to have a rough draft aesthetic. it shows and it's fantastic! I think Bécs' sparse and rough analog character make it a good successor to the more digital Black Sea. though, I hope he continues exploring his more digital, pristine sound on future records.

Actually, someone just pointed out that the title track sounds a bit like "You Can't Always Get What You Want"!

"you can never have an album that is a 'bit too similar' to endless summer" [2] it's a return to form and he was in top form with Endless Summer, one of the finest electronic records of all time so I hardly find that to be a bad thing
