Vienna, Austria

Christian Fennesz (born 25 December 1962) is an Austrian guitarist active in electronic music, often credited on albums simply as Fennesz.

Fennesz uses guitar and notebook computers to make multilayered compositions that blend melody and conventional musical instruments with harsh, irregular glitch-influenced sounds and washes of white noise. He lives and works in Vienna, Austria.

Christian Fennesz’s trademark sound combines guitar playing with digital techniques like granular synthesis. This style has been described as “Rock meets PowerBook”.

His oeuvre is far broader though - he’s been at the forefront of digital music for many years now. Hotel Paral.lel won the Prix Ars Electronica Award of Distinction for Digital Musics in 1999 along with Pita’s Seven Tons For Free.

At the frontier of contemporary music is Fennesz: a meticulous laptop conceptualist who weaves tangible melodies and glowing guitars through dense, symphonic electronica. Fennesz uses guitar and computer to create shimmering, swirling electronic sound of enormous range and complex musicality. “Imagine the electric guitar severed from cliché and all of its physical limitations, shaping a bold new musical language.” - (City Newspaper, USA).

Christian Fennesz is known from his own particular musical world as well as his impeccable work in creating beautiful compositions for guitar.

While I still can't get into Summer, Becs' first half immediately floored me. The second half isn't quite as strong (Sav lags at bit), but overall a great album. Felt like it was slept on last year.

Very much enjoying the Venice reissue and the Mahler thing. Becs might be my album of the year.

Haru is not a Fennesz track, it's a Fennesz + Sakamoto track. Fix yo tags, people.

Bécs is easily his best work since Endless Summer and just like Endless Summer, it keeps getting better with each new listen.
