Biography

Birmingham, England (1970 – 1983, 1985 – 1986, 2000 – 2001)

Electric Light Orchestra were a band which formed in Birmingham, England in 1970. The band was formed by Jeff Lynne (vocals, guitar, multiple instruments), Roy Wood (multiple instruments, vocals), Richard Tandy (keyboards, vocals) and Bev Bevan (drums). Lynne, Wood and Bevan were former members of the psychedelic rock band The Move. The band’s lineup would fluctuate throughout its original incarnation, although Lynne, Tandy and Bevan would remain constant members.

They incorporated the sounds of string ensembles, vocoders and dub echos into rock songs, thereby creating a very sophisticated studio version of rock. The musical content of ELO songs often went far beyond usual chord structures, mixing pop songwriting with classical romanticism and synthesized sounds. The band claim that their music “picks up where The Beatles’ 1967 song I Am the Walrus left off.”

Formed in 1970 by Roy Wood, Jeff Lynne and Bev Bevan (the remaining members of the 1960s rock group The Move). The band used cellos, violin, horns and woodwinds to give their music a classical sound. This was an idea Roy Wood initially had while with The Move, to take rock music in a new direction. In 1970 when Carl Wayne left the The Move, Jeff Lynne, front man with fellow Brum band Idle Race, responded to Wood’s second invitation to join the line-up, with the lure of starting the new band.

Time and Zoom - the greatest greatness. But so underrated in the past as well as nowadays. Jeff Lynne is a huge artist.

Both from different decades - but "Time" and "Out of the Blue" are absolute masterpieces. They deserve much better press than they got on their releases.

ELO is in my top 5 favorite bands of all time. Jeff Lynne is a legend and it's a shame that they were so under-rated back in the day.

Forgot to mention my introduction to ELO began when i started school in 1980 the hot single at the time was the just released 'Don't Bring Me Down' which i would hear on the car radio all the time and i finally asked for the record and i got the 45 single with the Jet logo which was the first record i ever owned.A few years later when i got into my teen years i started getting curious and bought some albums and among the first was ELO's Greatest Hits which is a good way to introuduce someone to the band.

'Time' is definitely underrated and deserves more attention when discussing some of the great concept albums throughout the history of rock.My fav album changes as the years go by but right now i would have to pick 'Face The Music' led by the brilliant masterpiece Fire On High.

Electric Light Orchestra - Very Good Group!!! А, на мой слух и вкус, так альбом 1981-го года "Time" у ELO лучший! По крайней мере из тех, что я слышал :)

I used to confuse a bit ELO with Eloy, but not anymore. Different prog styles. This is more mainstream prog/synth rock, but still good. 'Fire on High' is great, should be on Top-15
