Biography

Downstares has been a name used by a few bands and artists, however the most noticeable was a small, local Depeche Mode inspired band Walter De Backer (Gotye) formed with three of his friends in High School. Little is known about the band, however they were formed in the mid 90s and were together until the year 2000. The band was well-known locally and during their time together they recorded a few songs - however the only one that's known was named "1-900", and only a few seconds of recording exists online.
After the band dissolved Gotye would go on to work on solo music from 2000 ~ 2001. In this time he created a self-released album which caught the attention of a radio station called Triple J who decided to play these songs on their station. He'd rework the self-released album and would later release it under a label in 2003 to critical acclaim. During this time he'd also form a new band named " The Basics" with some other friends in 2002. Gotye would work on both solo music and music with The Basics, becoming well-known nationally - and in 2011 he released "Making Mirrors" which quickly became famous internationally and catapulted him into the spotlight.

The other bands using the name "Downstares" have little to no information about them online.
