Biography
DOX, born Amin Fleary hails from the Crown Heights neighborhood of Brooklyn, NY. His early years were defined by a stepmother addicted to crack-cocaine, and a father, who spent most of his time working odd jobs to support the family. DOX often acted as the man of the house, which at the time was an abandoned building. It was there that he learned at an early age that nothing would be given to him. His origins were like many urban environments of the era, ripe with the crack infestation and resulting violence found in nearly every major city during the 1980’s.
Fortunately, avoiding the trappings of his less than ideal living conditions and surroundings, DOX gravitated to hip-hop at an early age via the classic album: “Midnight Marauders” by A Tribe Called Quest. The passion and artistry throughout the album and specifically on such songs as “Award Tour” and “Oh My God,” left an everlasting impression on the budding M.C. DOX would go on to be heavily influenced by the likes of Nas, Notorious BIG, Jay-Z and DMX; whose music provided him with a personal connection, which is the same connection he aims to afford his audience.
Ultimately however, it’s the pains, joys, turmoil and triumphs which are often associated with ghetto living that serve as the main source of inspiration in much of DOX’s music. And while the origins of his music surface from a very distinct history, his lyrical and musical versatility have drawn the likes of diverse crowds with one common interest, the love of hip hop!
