Los Angeles, United States (2009 – present)

Chelsea Wolfe is a singer/songwriter and eponymous full band started in 2009 out of Los Angeles, California. Her style has been described as “”, and her music has been described as a “specific brand of drone-metal-art-folk”.

Inspired by the dark state of the world and the strange connection between all things, she creates a unique musical blend of , and spiritual realm funeral songs. With influences ranging from the great minds of Ingmar Bergman and David Lynch, to soviets and end-times literature, her songs conjure visions of other dimensions, claustrophobic echo-rooms and parking garage cathedrals.

Now that I've listened the whole album (more than once) I can say that this album is pure and subtle mortal darkness covered with this mantles of mechanical rawness. I can notice that this album was conceived in that most obscure places on Chelsea Wolfe's head. It swirls around me. But I must be agree with something, Chelsea and Ben should have been in charge of the production.

This album is melting away what little brain cells I have left. Survive is ridiculously good!

The tracks I like the least are the ones she didn't compose ("Iron Moon" "Color of Blood"). I don't appreciate John Congleton's production too much either, for the same reason I didn't like the latest St. Vincent record. Oh well, it's still Chelsea and I love the new record.

If you mean the filthier part of Abyss, the closest is Apokalypsis ("Pale on Pale" "The Wasteland"), but only if you don't mind too much vocal effects. Don't hesitate to check out PiB even if she experiments with electropop in its first half (she does it in a very atmospheric way though), the second half may be more worth your time. Apart from that, there's her lo-fi debut and a clean acoustic album.

Abyss is glorious, I love it. I haven't listened to any of her other albums though, does she have any that are similar?

@yuri_s_a_n: it's how it worked for me, sort of, because I started with her very first album and couldn't enjoy her music until I got to listen to "Pain is Beauty". I instantly fell in love with it. Then "Abyss" managed to keep me as a loyal listener.

I think the best album to start is "pain is beauty", it's a great album that has her most listened songs, it also has no weak tracks, so it worked great for me.
