Born Gold

Born Gold is the high-energy, beat-driven songwriting project of Canadian pop experimentalist Cecil Frena. Caught in an unusual dialogue between future-leaning electronic music, harsh noise and mainstream pop, Born Gold conjures stuttering, blown-out and chopped guitar peals, erratic, bubbling synth arpeggios, sparkling drum machine peals and bursts of meticulously processed digital noise. Oh, and hooks, hooks, hooks.

Born Gold’s debut LP Bodysongs, which arrived September 20th, 2011 on Hovercraft / Crash Symbols, is a selected singles compilation of uncompromising and infectious danceable pop anthems.

In the live context, Born Gold’s percolating pop is transformed into something like an ecstatic, surreal, and unsettling dream sequence: bandmates confront the audience in masks, smash shovels together, percuss on hockey helmets and generally get a party started unlike any other.

Born Gold runs with Canada’s shadowy coven Hovercraft (Purity Ring, Kuhrye-oo).

No Sorrow seems to be bringing back a lot of the feelings that got me so heavily invested when I heard Neon Graveyard and subsequently Bodysongs. I admit I had put him on a pretty far back-burner after not really feeling both Sleepwalker and Exit.

I Am An Exit has slowly become my favourite album of theirs. I was mad about Body Songs, less so about Little Sleepwalker but I Am An Exit is a clear leader for me.

I dunno, i really liked Little Sleepwalker after giving it a proper chance, I'm hoping it'll happen with the new album too. It seems like they took the sugary sweet noisiness out though

Little Sleepwalker isn't that bad when you revisit it without expecting Bodysongs. New album is really spotty, though. I really love Hunger and like Abdomen a lot and they kind of sound like elements from LS brightened up

Hunger and Abdomen seem to be a nice blend of the sounds he presented on the last two albums - I'm really enjoying them both
