How to Dress Well

Brooklyn NY, United States (2009 – present)

How to Dress Well is the stage name of ethereal R&B songwriter and producer Tom Krell. Krell’s burgeoning career began in 2009 when, having just moved from Brooklyn to Berlin, his songs began to emerge online via a hugely prolific string of free, digital EPs posted in anonymity on his blog. Combining a gorgeous falsetto with fractured R&B-influenced beats, an instinctive ear for subtly devastating melody and elements of noise, sound collage and avant-garde composition, Love Remains offered a beautiful window into a startlingly fully realized artistic imagination.

Praised for both its conceptual strength and immediate emotional resonance, Love Remains duly garnered vast critical acclaim and highlights such as “Ready For The World” and “Decisions” saw Krell accredited with having given birth to a new, narcotized strain of R&B that has since spawned a host of imitators.

Since Love Remains, Krell has toured the world, recorded an EP with an orchestra (the Just Once EP, with proceeds going to raise awareness about mental illness) and, always prolific, written and recorded a lot of new music - all whilst continuing work on a philosophy doctorate. September 4th 2012 will see him share this new body of work with the world with the release of Total Loss, his new album.

Why is there so much unnecessary drama Tom's shoutbox? His most recent album is a great album. End of story.

His 2 previous albums are virtually unlistenable. He finally got it right with the new album.

the obfuscation made the loneliness of the songs transferable in a way that's significantly different than what's going on recently imo. similar to how daniel johnston's tapes have a certain charm to them that isn't present in 1990 and any album thereafter. also, the obfuscation/poor recording sort of strips all the elements of an r&b song down to its basic elements and i find that very interesting in a Les Rallizes Denudes-sort of way.

love remains is definitely my favorite and the album i've listened to the most from HTDW. regardless, i like these new albums because he seems more confident in his sound and what he's trying to accomplish. pretty sure i'm a bigger fan of the fact that this type of stuff is being made and who tom is than the music itself :3

lol only half taking the piss. I just find it funny when people want an artist to return to a sound they haven't done in years. The tunes are not much different now, they're just recorded better!

are you taking the piss? If an artist adds "obfuscation" to a project, that doesn't differ anything ~ it's still music that he/she has released and therefore is a counterpart to their SOUND as a whole. And do you think you need to adore every aspect of an album or track to "truly like" it ? What the fuk does truly liking music even mean!? If someone likes a song because of a certain effect/twitch placed within it, it doesn't make them a FAKE fan. i think this new album has you feeling all susceptible and sensitive mate, just take it eZ :-)
