Dunfermline, United Kingdom (1981 – 2001)

Big Country were a new wave/alternative rock band which formed in Dunfermline, Scotland in 1981. The band consisted of Stuart Adamson (vocals, guitar), Bruce Watson (guitar, vocals), Tony Butler (bass) and Mark Brzezicki (drums). Adamson was a former member of the Scottish punk band The Skids. The band was best known for using the device known as the “e-bow” to alter their guitars to sound like bagpipes. Despite having 15 Top 40 hits in the UK, the band has remained a one hit wonder in the US with their third single “In A Big Country”. The band split in 2001 shortly after Adamson’s suicide on December 16, 2001.

I'm pleasantly surprised with their work. I can imagine also other singles apart from "In a Big Country" at the top of the charts of their time.

Reading 'In A Big Country' by Allan Glen just now. A good account of Stuart Adamson's time in The Skids and Big Country.

@priedits Most people that age listen to crappy happy meal music and only show an interest in whatever's 'cool' at school or wherever. It's hard not to follow the crowd when you're young. I find it admirable and refreshing to hear, it shows they're making an effort to find/listen to great music. So chill the hell out, yeah?

Radio friendly chorus and inspiring guitar crescendos of debut record became group's hallmark. Their songs have a strong element of social commentary, as in Steeltown, but album failed to live up to the promise of The Crossing. However, the 90's beckoned promisingly but they became yet another casualty to The Fad Machine. www.eightiesmusicfan.co.cc.

Many of you will be aware of the mutual admiration between Stuart Adamson and Bill Nelson. I'm posting this because Bill has been asked to perform as part of ITV's legends series in London on March 26. The concert is to be filmed by ITV and attendees will get to meet Bill, have photos taken at a champagne reception, get a DVD of the event with your name on it. The tickets are expensive, but before anyone asks, it is the TV company and the promoters that will gain from this and not Mr Nelson, who will barely break even. It is rumoured that Bill will play the song he wrote for Stuart's funeral 'For Stuart' Anyway, if you are interested please follow this link http://www.musicglue.com/metropolisstudios
