Manchester, United Kingdom (2007 – present)

Bad Lieutenant is an group which formed in 2007 in Manchester, UK.

It is the project of New Order’s Bernard Sumner and Phil Cunningham following the departure of Peter Hook from New Order in the Spring of 2007. Jake Evans of Rambo and Leroy is also a member. Other collaborators are New Order’s Stephen Morris, drummer Jack Mitchell from Mutineers and bassist Alex James from Blur.

In March 2009, Sumner appeared on the Sky Arts series, Songbook with Cunningham and Evans to discuss his songwriting and also to perform 4 acoustic songs from his career. These were Love Will Tear Us Apart, Bizarre Love Triangle, Getting Away With It and a premiere of a Bad Lieutenant song called Sink Or Swim.

In early July 2009, a press release was released which read…

“Bad Lieutenant formed in 2007 with New Order’s Bernard Sumner (guitar and vocals) alongside Phil Cunningham (guitar) and Jake Evans (guitar and vocals). We can now confirm that they have completed their long awaited debut LP Never Cry Another Tear which is set for worldwide release on 5th October 2009 on Triple Echo Records. The album features sounds that have helped make New Order such a treasured, innovative force over the past three decades, but also featured is a brand new voice from exotic Macclesfield, Jake Evans.

I like this album and I think it's more than just a voice. Yes, it reminds me of the last NO's album, which is my favorite NO album and I needed more songs like that. So, this album may not bring anything new, but there are some fine tunes on it.

When you accept the fact their music is nothing new, but just for the love of music, you can really enjoy it. And so I do.

The new Twist of Fate remixes are nice... it's now my 2nd favourite track, after Higher Wider Deeper. But I'm still hoping the next album to be a little bit more punchy.

Being a massive fan of JD/NO, I was lucky enough to see New Order on 5 occasions some years ago, and even met the band.Great bunch! No doubt the talent will always be there and the desire to make music, but the new lifestyles of middle aged guys such as B.S. seemed to have dampened down the earlier punchy tunes that they used to regularly and so superbly produce. But good on you Bernard.Always a 'known'-pleasure.

In the mean time, it was not very difficult to be better than the final NO album... Unfortunately I found both records, last NO and BL, very similar. For me it's disposable music. We are very far from Low-Life or Technique.

Its had time to sink in, and i can honestly say that the Bad Lieutenant album is better than the final New Order album. I prefer Bernard to make more electronic music, but overall the songwriting is better and that really counts for something

There's hardly any artists who improve with age. Our favourite musicians are only humans after all and like all humans, we're at our best when young. You can't expect a 54 year old guy to produce vibrant, exciting, genre-busting music after 30 years in the business. The whole world of New Order haven't really done anything ground-breaking or out-of-this-world-fantastic since the late 80's. The best you're gonna get is safe, melodic, familiar but ultimately good music. Yes, there's a few duds on the album but to say it's boring is bull. And, let's face it, it pisses over that Freebass LP from a great height!
