There is more than one artist with the name Anathema.

1) Anathema is a band from Liverpool, England, UK primarily known as one of the pioneering and leading acts, incorporating growling, poetic lyrics and complex arrangements into the traditional doom riffage. Later in their career, beginning with “Eternity”, they moved away from this sound into more melodic, .

Anathema formed in 1990 as a doom metal band, initially under the name Pagan Angel. In November of that year, the band recorded their first demo, entitled “An Iliad of Woes”. This demo caught the attention of several bands from the English metal scene, allowing Anathema to play gigs with bands like Bolt Thrower and Paradise Lost.

At the beginning of 1991, the band adopted its current name, and gained a lot of attention with the release of their second demo entitled “All Faith Is Lost”, resulting in a four-album deal with Peaceville Records. Their first release under the label was “The Crestfallen EP” in November 1992. They took the material from that album on the road, touring with Cannibal Corpse.
“Serenades”, Anathema’s debut LP, attracted a lot of mainstream attention, propelling their “Sweet Tears” music video onto the MTV playlist. Anathema’s first European tour was in 1994, and was closely followed by gigs at the Independent Rock Festival in Brazil.

I've heard one new song off the album and it is incredible. It's fresh and energetic and much more complex than earlier material

Read my shout more carefully, also I'm not wholly judging it, just based on what I've read and heard it seems like it will be disappointing. Maybe I'm expecting too much, WHBWH was brilliant and it was probably because they had like 7 years to write new music, and now that they're back to their 2 year cycle the material is just not going to be as good.

Well, if you didn't like the previous 5 then chances are you won't like this either. They won't go back to their metal style. How you could say Judgment was a disappointment is beyond me though. I also don't understand how you can judge a 1 hour record based on 30 secs of sound in the middle of a song. I do agree with you about cliche lyrics though. Weather Systems had a lot of that.

Goddamnit the past five releases of my fave bands have been big disappointments and it's sounding like this one will be too. The Lost Song teaser sounded incredibly uninspired and I feel like the dumb cliche lyrics are becoming more and more prominent. Well here's hoping the one song will be worth it.

I have mixed feelings with the new album. Even if Anathema is my favourite band I was disappointed with "Distant Satellites". It is too bland, too soft, perfect to sleep though. However, the song 'Anathema' could easily be their best song ever, incredible and perfection.

I couldn't agree more Iamdelavie. I watch that dvd a few times a week still after having it for so long. All the songs are amazing but A simple mistake is just too too good

I think that "A Simple Mistake", especially at its end, is their highlights when we picture the live performance. It' simply amazing... with the keyboard synths and the passionate Vinny voice singing "It's starting to rain" and that guitar riff.. and the drums... I haven't felt like this EVER before.

That is not Anathema, but Long Distance Calling. Song composed by Vincent and performed by Petter Carlsen.

"distant satellites is the culmination of everything ANATHEMA been working up to so far in our musical path. It contains almost every conceivable element of the heartbeat of Anathema music that it is possible to have". So there might be some doom elements in the album as that was part of their musical path and is a element of Anathema music.

Okay, that's your opinion, and I wasn't asuming about you or talking about your wishes, I said people aka in general, there's still many people wanting for doom metal again lol That's all your opinion, not a statement, I think different, for me the Untouchable songs are the best ones from WS, I dont think it's a sin to think different, is it? Eternity is an awesome album imo, I like especially the Eternity part songs :) And I'm very curious about this 3 part song in Distant Satellites!

Sigh... why do you assume that I am waiting for more Doom Metal or even Metal? Completely untrue. My favorite album is AND. Most of WS is pretty good, especially Lightning Song, Lost Child and TBATE. I just didn't find Untouchable that interesting musically or lyrically and are tbh the weakest songs on WS. They have done, much much better before. I am sceptical of the new part songs because 3 songs similar in music., lyrics and theme can quickly become tiresome. I think Eternity suffers a bit from exactly this.
