A Hawk And A Hacksaw is a band from Albuquerque, New Mexico. The band mainly consists of percussionist Jeremy Barnes (formerly of Neutral Milk Hotel) and violinist Heather Trost (formerly of Foma). The music is mostly , usually centred around Jeremy’s accordion. There are occasional unintelligible vocals, shouts and cheers, although the album, The Way The Wind Blows, has more vocal pieces.

When playing live, Jeremy plays many of the instruments himself simultaneously; strapping bells and drumsticks to his body enables him to play percussion while playing accordion. He has recently been accompanied by Heather Trost, who joined him on his recent tour with The Olivia Tremor Control.

this is pure balkan music (there's little experimentation but overall it's balkan style). if they're an independent band then mark it as "indie", other discussions make no sense. it's balkan music and I should know I've been living here for 22 years now.

What kind of music is which I couldn't turn off all dawn time when wasn't able to sleep or studying or anything else; it feeded my nervous system.

I tried listening to Neutral Milk Hotel but this is so much better. I honestly can't take Jeff Mangum seriously.

I like to watch youtube videos of gigantic circle pits and walls of death on mute while playing this band. Very amusing.

For anyone who likes the weirdness of early A Hawk and a Hacksaw (I'm thinking largely of "Darkness at Noon") should try Zelwer/Jean-Marc Zelwer/La Kumpania Zelwer. I find his music a good pair to much of A Hawk and a Hacksaw. I would start with "La Fiancee Aux Yeux De Bois" or "Daissa".

since i'm from balkan, i can say it they sound too "balkan" actually, it would be better if they ease off a bit and add more western or pop sound too it. also the fact that they are americans doesnt change a bit, they would fit just fine in any of the gypsy "orchestra" bands like Goran Bregovic's etc.

There's nothing wrong with people outside the Balkans playing music from those parts. Music is not an exclusive right.

i tend to tag this sort of thing indie-folk, and music from the balkan region, tag balkan. i don't see anything inferior about indie-folk - i love it specifically in some ways, eg certain connotations of wanderlust/escapism - but i've heard ripplings of this debate before, with definite pejorative tone towards it, as being some sort of western plastic sham. i find that annoying

i'm not really understanding it either but i think the point was made not that beirut, hacksaw or their fans are "fake" (??) but that it's not really "balkan" music, it's balkan-inspired american indie music. obviously hacksaw sticks a lot closer to traditional styles though and beirut draws on a lot of different stuff.

John Jacob Niles, the Boone Tolliver Recordings

23 Apr 2012 | from ahawkandahacksaw.blogspot.com/

"Really, it’s the perfect setting for Niles’ music; his falsetto voice cuts like the wind and howls like a banshee, given extra urgency by the intimacy of his surroundings. Niles whips through Mattie Groves, inhabiting its …
