Biography

New York City, United States (1993 – present)

宇多田ヒカル (Utada Hikaru), born January 19, 1983 in New York City, United States, also known by her fan-nickname “ヒッキー” (Hikki), is a third culture singer, composer, arranger, and record producer in Japan and the United States.

Utada Hikaru was born to Japanese parents who both had roots in the Japanese music industry; her father, Teruzane Utada, was a producer, while her mother, Junko Utada, was an singer (she performed under the stage name 藤圭子(Keiko Fuji)). Utada Hikaru has been recording since 1993. She made her first professional recording at the age of twelve, and recorded her first album, Precious, in 1996 under the pseudonym Cubic U. This album led to her career overseas. In a recent MTV interview (MTV’s You Hear It First, October 2004), Utada said: “Someone in Japan heard it, at a Japanese record company, and he said, ‘Oh, can’t you write in Japanese? You speak Japanese.’ And I didn’t want to say no, so I had to try it.”

Utada Hikaru was married to Kazuaki Kiriya, a photographer and movie director. He directed several of her music videos, including “FINAL DISTANCE”, “traveling”, “Hikari”/””, “Sakura Drops”, “Deep River”, “Dareka no Negai ga Kanau Koro”/”誰かの願いが叶うころ”, “You Make Me Want To Be A Man”, “Be My Last”, “Passion”, and “Keep Tryin’”. Also, “Dareka no Negai ga Kanau Koro”/”誰かの願いが叶うころ” was played during the credits of Kiriya’s directorial debut, Casshern. Their 4 1/2-year marriage was drawn to a close on March 2nd, 2007 as both Kazuaki Kiriya and Utada Hikaru filed divorce papers.

@TheDarkThrearah you can use the "Sort" options on iTunes to keep them together as one single artist but with different artist names.

Maybe you can make a playlist with both

Excellent! Thanks for the help guys. I'm the same, I tag it all as Utada Hikaru because that's what it was released as. And then of course Exodus as Utada. Which leads me onto my next question, is there a way to group Utada Hikaru and Utada together on my iPod so that I can shuffle the songs together? I hate them being separate.

I tag everything as 宇多田ヒカル because that's what her CDs have her registered as when I put them in my computer. And I tag her English stuff as Utada because of the same way and I'm happy with that.

to me everything by her is simply tagged Utada Hikaru, no kanji, no utada, no shit. it's labels logistics, we fans shouldn't be worried about.

Yeah, but it sucks 'cause its one and the same artist. And its not like pseudonyms or something

I have her japanese stuff tagged as Utada Hikaru (last.fm autocorrects it to this page) Her english stuff as Utada. And if she releases stuff in the future under Hikaru Utada, then I'll just tag it like that.

@Kamikamikami - I know exactly what you mean. I had all her stuff on my iPod before, but then had to restore it, so lost everything. Slowly working my way through buying her stuff, but changing it all so that it doesn't affect my play counts on here :) Not that last.fm always scrobbles from my iPod anyway, so I know I've lost loads of plays :(

@TheDarkThrearah: It's silly the way tagging works... I still have my old english stuff tagged as Utada, hell, I have almost 2k plays of it, and there's no way to change that unless enough people vote to changing Utada to Hikaru Utada. If not for the way I already have it, I'd probably tag everything as Hikaru Utada, even the japanese stuff... Would be much 'cleaner'.

Why does Island still care? They obviously didn't when the album was released and barely gave it any promotion other than Saturday morning TV gigs. I still wish I'd gotten the chance to see her live when she came to the US. :[

So should I be tagging everything as Hikaru Utada now or not. I bought Heart Station and Ultra Blue from iTunes and that's how they'd done it. I changed it to Utada Hikaru, but just wanted to know what everybody else thought :)

Made the horrible mistake of listening to Sakura Nagashi right after listening to Goodbye Happiness. I don't think my heart can take the emotional rollercoaster.

v I think they are :/ glad to hear her father's still working on getting it released, but the amount of red tape they must be running into over it is getting out of hand...

Are Island Records still interfering with the release of In The Flesh? She paid for it herself and had finished her contract with them but they're still wanting more money?
