Toronto’s Airick Woodhead started out making videos and websites under a variety of pseudonyms before settling on Doldrums, in tribute to the children’s book The Phantom Tollbooth. The bored little boy in the book underwent a series of misadventures on his mission to rescue the princesses of a magical kingdom, Princess Rhyme and Princess Reason. You could say the same of Doldrums, in a way: Woodhead’s panicky, androgynous vocals and chopped-up samples teeter on the edge of electro-hallucinogenic freak-outs before accessible pop melodies pull them safely back to the real world. His Empire Sound EP is out on No Pain in Pop, is available for free download, and is awesome.
