Yes indeed. Add Romy's debut to that too along with the new album from Chemical Brothers and Friday is looking stacked as hell. Where on the earth is that Pitchfork review of Slowdive? I guess it's coming tomorrow.

Terrible news. I can't imagine listening to anything else this week. Double Negative and Hey What are two of the best albums I've ever heard.

Well, be sure to take care, old queens aren't doing so hot lately. (I only wish another old guy with too much power would follow suit.)

It's a great album, I really like it. This year has been stacked with amazing albums.

Definitely! I'm working on a top 100 list continually - it's actually a lot longer with most of the albums I've listened to from 2022 (currently about 170 albums). I'd be interested to find a platform that I could host this on properly. Last.fm used to have a blog / journal feature back in the day but they annoyingly removed it in one of their re-brands.

I published my top 200 of the 2010s decade on Medium here: https://alexchocholko.medium.com/wrapped-up-200-great-albums-from-the-2010s-cda273e250b9 but it was a lot of work to sort out the images and didn't quite feel like the best platform to use.

Such an amazing list of albums! I need to check out more Joanna Newsome. But I think I agree with your top 200. One artist that I would potentially put on my top 200 which is not on your list is "Low Roar, whose frontman Ryan Karazija sadly passed recently at the age of 40. Anyway, not sure if you have heard of them/him, but his passing has hit me hard. His music really touched me....

The Suburbs probably. I wrote this piece about it on its tenth anniversary: https://alexchocholko.medium.com/moving-past-the-feeling-a-decade-in-the-suburbs-5e6f37a71153

Hey, yeah I really like it but I think their best stuff was around 1997-2002! Did you see their set at Glastonbury? You can probably watch it on YouTube, it was really amazing.

Your top albums are literally my life. 2012 - 2017 and knock knock are my two AOTYs, I'm in love with the new Sophie album, I really dig Compro, just listened to the new Barnett yesterday and loved it, Settle is an all-time favorite... PLUS Leon Vynehall's "Rojus" record has become an obsession of mine this year. WHO ARE YOU.

P4k is a trusty source for me too, but I definitely don't check RA enough. I'll start doing that!

Abandon Window just has a sadness to it that is really profound that I only just recently re-discovered. I'm working on a piece of writing at the moment that argues Immunity is one of music's rare releases in recent years to retain its artistic intentions and still become commercially successful.

Whoa, that’s a really fascinating topic. I guess possibly you could argue with something like word of mouth? Those voices were big enough to help the record reach those commercial heights. I guess a lot of people can really feel something with the album, which raises its emotional appeal..

One of my points argues that the fact there's no vocals on the record at all means we're forced to have an internal response to it rather than external (we can't sing along to it) and thereby a somewhat more emotional response. Not sure how it holds up but I find it interesting to talk about it.

I did end up having suss. I saw those links in your bio and figured maybe this is where you do your writing. It was. I read it, it’s actually an absolute brilliant piece of writing. How you explain it all and references to other albums in that year. So naturally i followed your tumblr, If it’s okay I’m keen to have a read back at some of your other pieces of writing. It’s like a total different point of view of music that I haven’t really read in a while... or at all. It’s like you pick a moment in your life with that album and expand on that magnificently whilst embracing all the other music around that time. I’ve also been wondering your thoughts on artists like Helios and Goldmund (They’re both the same artist; Keith Kenniff) who makes this incredible ambient music. Also!, this incredibly chilled out album from Khruangbin called ‘Con Todo El Mundo’ or their past records. If you’ve ever had a listen.

Thanks very much for the kind words, I also published it on Medium as it's much easier to use a website that has a built in platform like that instead of using my, quite frankly, outdated Tumblr. I will make sure to check out your ambient recommendations.

Hey, are you British by the way? I'm not sure why I have that idea, maybe because you write "favourite" :) - anyhow, regardless of whether you are, I very much recommend Saint Etienne's latest, "Home Counties". Gorgeous listen imho. And (so) lavishly English :D

Thanks! Love to see what other people have been listening to and get new music. Sometimes wish I could erase a few of the artists from my archive though but that would be an untrue reflection of the past ;-)

I definitely understand the feeling! But I like to think there's no "bad" way to enjoy music and it's all part of our musical journey :-) I think your archives are great but then again I would do, since mine would be extremely similar going back 10 years...! Any big favourites from this year so far?

This year is really turning out well musically! My favourites so far are Mount Eerie, Kendrick, Dirty Projectors, Laura Marling, Mac DeMarco, Actress, Real Estate, GAS and Forest Swords. Also loving Feist's Pleasure and Perfume Genius' No Shape. The thought of upcoming releases from Fleet Foxes and hopefully Grizzly Bear means this will be such an incredible year for my favourite artists releasing new music and I will lose my shit if we finally get new records from Arcade Fire, Vampire Weekend and The War On Drugs!!

Some of these are my 2017 favourites too (Feist, Perfume Genius), and some of them I haven't heard of so I'll have to explore! A couple months on it looks like you got a lot of the releases you were wishing for :D I've felt generally spoiled musically lately, and did you see Björk's news that she's releasing an album fairly imminently... inspired by Tinder ? Haha. Good times.

yep, I toootally agree! back in 2000 I had like 20 cassettes I would listen to all the time, when I wanted a new CD, I would go borrow a few at a rental shop or buy one, never downloading tons of music like crazy and never listening to everything properly anyways. getting my first ipod and being able to have all my fave music and much more was actually wonderful, but then I just ended up on the current bandwagon of not giving any CD/song a considerable amount of time.. Goldfrapp's "Tales of Us" was one of the recent (sort of) albums I gave a lot of time and patience and it totally proved to be worth it.

Oh we are so old school! I am very glad someone is still going to this day. Few friends have also stopped on my side. So it's nice to see people like you pop up on that side bar thing. I hare my username though. A friend from that day chose it and I guess I have stuck with it. Never wanted to reset an account. But eh. It's just a name. I have looked a little into Father John Misty. I need to give it all a proper go! I do have Joni Mitchells greatest hits! But again I've just not given it any time. Obviously cause I am an idiot! Swift though.. yeah I get obsessed for a few months then its nothing... This years music so far has been amazing. Kendrick Lemar, Courtney Barnett, Laura Marling & Clarence Clarity. Marina & The diamonds I keep coming back to a lot. She is a favourite. And her music has been quite effective emotionally. That Sufjan though. Constantly getting lost in it.

After all this time! Your music taste! My goodness, I wish my charts could look as amazing. Not that I'm overly criticising what I listen too. I'd like a few more rare artists up higher. They'll get there. Fallen in love with Sufjans latest and Bjork is a constant necessary listen. I just wish I listened to her from a much earlier stage of life. But oh well. She's in my blood now.

My two irremovable choices are Scott Walker and Bjork. You got 13,262 listenings of her, I haven't noticed it before, wonderful, but they're not enough yet. Some thoughts on Vulnicura?

That's really the best way to describe it. There are plenty of great albums out there, but Carrie and Lowell really is beautiful. I keep finding a new favourite song too. Haven't been able to pull myself away to check out the new Modest Mouse just yet, how's that?
