Biography

"Jasper's songs are earnest pop. They evoke a lyrical space that reveals the character of a Pacific metropolis - openness and depth in the presence of looming mountains, dazzling glass, steel and unending surf. These are songs of yearning for rooted connection in the urban setting, sung by a heart that bleeds. Jasper's tenor vibrato, at times a breathless whisper, at times a warbled cry, both the timbre of a soul having seen its share of hurt and celebrating it's return to joy."

- Jay Blackwood, NXEW, Live Music Project

Jasper Sloan Yip’s career began in the summer of 2007 with the release of his solo debut, White Elephant. A bootstrapped project, White Elephant is honest, rough and imaginative.

After the release, Jasper spent ten months traveling, and writing what became 2010’s Every Day and All at Once. This album’s first single, ‘Kiddo,’ began receiving frequent play on CBC Radio 3 just weeks after studio work had wrapped. When the album was released in March 2010, Jasper had performed live on CBC Radio 1 two times and recorded a seven-song CBC Radio 3 Sessions Podcast. His next single, ‘Slowly,’ spent 10 weeks on CBC Radio 3’s top 30, peaking at #4. Jasper’s final accomplishment in 2010 was having his song ‘Today’ appear in an episode of ABC’s Brothers and Sisters.

Since then, Jasper and his band have toured Western Canada and showcased at festivals like BreakOut West, Canada Music Fest, the Vancouver International Jazz Festival, and Calgary’s Sled Island. After spending the last six months of 2011 competing as a top twenty finalist in the Peak Performance Project, Jasper is hard at work preparing for a new album and a cross-Canada tour for 2012.
