Chiba, Tokyo, Japan (1982 – 1997, 2007 – present)

X (later changed to X JAPAN in 1992 to avoid confusion with the American band X) is arguably one of the most influential bands in the history of the Japanese music scene. Formed by childhood friends Yoshiki and Toshi in 1982 at Chiba, Japan, X was originally founded to play high energy rock music. Besides being one of the first Japanese acts to achieve mainstream success while on an independent label, the group is widely credited for pioneering the movement.

Their early music was , but later on they acquired a more sound.

The band consisted of Toshi (vocals), Yoshiki(drums, piano, composer, lyricist), hide (guitar), Pata (guitar), and Heath (bass), and Taiji (bassist) until 1997 when they disbanded.

Once Yoshiki and Toshi recruited bassist Taiji and guitarists hide and Pata, the band began moving on the indie circuit. They garnished abundant support and fans across Japan with their outrageous dress style.

They used long, dyed hair and leather, along with makeup to make themselves shocking to the people who went to see them. This look, and their musical style of fast, driving metal, mixed with softer ballads, was the defining origin of today’s band.

However, in 1996, after the release of their fifth and final album, DAHLIA, Toshi announced that he was departing from the band, for his own reasons - rumored to do with his wife disliking the band, his time commitment, and their performance of mostly sad, downbeat songs. Rather than go on without Toshi, the following year X JAPAN announced it was breaking up. At the end of the year, they had their final concert. X Japan split up in 1997.

Let's hope the new album drops this year, I've been recently getting into X Japan for a while now (Blue Blood's a pretty solid album and Art of Life is words), and I'd love to hear something new (besides IV and Jade).

Yoshiki mentioned in his interview with ANN that he's now concentrating on the album and that it should be out later this year.

Hopefully a bunch of other songs too... Maybe that's optimistic. But I remain a believer. :P

So what exactly is the new album going to be if it ever happens? Jade, the mythical long version of I.V., Hero, Born to be Free, Beneath the Skin, english Rusty Nail and english Kurenai, Without You and Endless Rain?

@Le_newtype: Actually it's Sugizo's song. S.K.I.N. only performed once 7 years ago and since it's a supergroup, they may never come out to play again or ever record something.

Found out later it was actually "Beneath the Skin," as in a remake of the s.k.i.n. song. Toshi's English didn't sound like he said that at all.

@Le_newtype: They played "Beneath the Skin" two times before Madison Square Garden.

They played another new song called "Beneath the sky". Don't follow them too closely, so I don't know if that's ever been played before. They also started with Jade and wanted the audience to sing along in the chorus. No one knew the words so it was just awkward.

Art of Life is gorgeous, but the live version is way superior.

As much as I love X...Yoshiki is so full of himself, miss seeing more from the other members. [3]

Yoshiki wants to keep all the attention of the band for himself. And it doesn't finish anything he starts, like Violet UK album "coming soon" since 2002. The other members are probably waiting for him to do something. Sugizo already said once that "X may be active again next year" (it was about 2012, IIRC), they just need Yoshiki to take some decisions. But he seems too busy promoting himself as the japanese rock god. [2]

We need to hear new material, not the same old stuff all over and over again. But I guess it's not going to happen. Still one of my fave bands, though.
