Chiba, Tokyo, Japan (1982 – 1997, 2007 – present)

X (later changed to X JAPAN in 1992 to avoid confusion with the American band X) is arguably one of the most influential bands in the history of the Japanese music scene. Formed by childhood friends Yoshiki and Toshi in 1982 at Chiba, Japan, X was originally founded to play high energy rock music. Besides being one of the first Japanese acts to achieve mainstream success while on an independent label, the group is widely credited for pioneering the movement.

Their early music was , but later on they acquired a more sound.

The band consisted of Toshi (vocals), Yoshiki(drums, piano, composer, lyricist), hide (guitar), Pata (guitar), and Heath (bass), and Taiji (bassist) until 1997 when they disbanded.

Once Yoshiki and Toshi recruited bassist Taiji and guitarists hide and Pata, the band began moving on the indie circuit. They garnished abundant support and fans across Japan with their outrageous dress style.

They used long, dyed hair and leather, along with makeup to make themselves shocking to the people who went to see them. This look, and their musical style of fast, driving metal, mixed with softer ballads, was the defining origin of today’s band.

However, in 1996, after the release of their fifth and final album, DAHLIA, Toshi announced that he was departing from the band, for his own reasons - rumored to do with his wife disliking the band, his time commitment, and their performance of mostly sad, downbeat songs. Rather than go on without Toshi, the following year X JAPAN announced it was breaking up. At the end of the year, they had their final concert. X Japan split up in 1997.

Yoshiki wants to keep all the attention of the band for himself. And it doesn't finish anything he starts, like Violet UK album "coming soon" since 2002. The other members are probably waiting for him to do something. Sugizo already said once that "X may be active again next year" (it was about 2012, IIRC), they just need Yoshiki to take some decisions. But he seems too busy promoting himself as the japanese rock god.

I think they're in a bit of an odd position right now because Yoshiki is pretty much the face of the band and the rest of the guys just seem like an entourage... It's not really the same band as before. But I'm sure the album will come out at one point or another. Seems kinda dumb for Yoshiki to go out and promote his solo stuff when everybody's waiting for the new X Japan album and tour, though. But I guess that's up to him.

I have to agree with Ygnwie 187 here because even though Angeltearsx can be partially correct with their comment: I have to disagree that Selling Albums does not always equal Musical Talents. Look at Miley Cyrus...Where is her Musical Talents? All she is good at is sticking her tongue out waving it around like she wants to lick a dog's asshole or something! As far as Bieber is with Talents? he has none! Except getting infamous for being a rich spoiled bitch boy! Who happens to believe "He is Entitled." Entitled for what? All these are is Industry pre-packaged nobodies who sell records because half of their fans are too stupid to know what true musical talents are! In five years no-one will ever remember who these people are. X Japan, Queen, and Bands from their standpoint have one thing in common that Bieber, Cyrus and other pre-packaged clones of the industry will never have: Momentum! They have left their mark in the History of Music!

The new album is never happening and even if it did it doesn't really matter, because they are never going to sound like they did from 1985-1992 again.

Yngwie167, selling records/being famous =/= musical talent. There is factual evidence that supports this claim. U know that, i know that...

The people picking on X Japan are just jealous of their musical talent and credibility. Everybody can have his/her own opinion and musical taste, but to say that X is lacking of talent is just ridicilous. And no, Hide or Pata can't be compared to an average Youtube guitarist. Because average YT guitarists haven't sold millions of albums, neither played almost flawlessly through a 45 minute song on stage infront of thousands of people nor composed plenty of songs that are known throughout the world. Please do exactly that with your own bands and THEN start criticizing on X Japan. Greetings from Germany!
