Biography

Valerio Sannicandro was born in Italy on January 16th 1971.
He studied Viola and Composition there and in 1995, after his Viola-degree, moved to Germany where he turned his attention more and more to contemporary music; got a post-graduate degree in Viola at the Folkwang Musikhochschule in Essen (with G.O.Roth) and attended master classes with Barbara Maurer and Garth Knox that inspired strongly his future work as new music performer. He begun a career as freelance violist, in his solo-recitals plays contemporary works by Sciarrino, Grisey, Maderna, Scelsi, Murail, etc.

He studied composition in Cologne with York Höller (dissertation: “Komposition als semiotischer Prozess”), in Frankfurt with Hans Zender, conducting with Peter Eötvös, and Computer Music in Essen with Dirk Reith. Received important influences by composers like Salvatore Sciarrino (IRCAM, Academie d’Eté), Helmut Lachenmann, Jonathan Harvey, Magnus Lindberg.
Appearances as conductor in Cologne (Triennale Köln, WDR-Orchestra), Darmstadt (Ferienkurse), Spain (Festival de Canaria) and Avignon (Centre Acanthes), conducts work by Stockhausen (first performance of “HOCH-ZEITEN”), Donatoni.
Winner of several composition competitions in Germany (among others the MUSICA VIVA, München in 2002) and Italy, as well as the Kranichsteiner Musikpreis 2000 of the Darmstädter Ferienkurse.

He has been invited for conferences and workshops in Prague (Music Academy), Berlin (Humboldt-Universität) and in 2002 has been teacher during the Darmstädter Ferienkurse.

His compositions have been performed among others by Salome Kammer, Ensemble Modern, Orchestra of bavarian Radio, Ensemble Recherche, Kroumata, Musikfabrik NRW, Ensemble Köln, Ensemble Aleph, e-mex, conducted by R. Rivolta, P. Hirsch, J. Avery, J. Stockhammer; recorded and broadcasted by the HR, MDR, Radio Bremen and Radio Prague 3; his works have been performed in Italy, Germany, France, England, Luxembourg, Czech Republic, Greece, Hungary, Sweden and Austria, Japan, Canada and USA.
Supported by the Heinrich-Strobel-Stiftung of SWR for the year 2003 and invited to the IRCAM-Cursus in 2003/2004 where he is currently "compositeur associé" in a research group on spatialisation . His works are published by SUVINI-ZERBONI in Milan (Italy).
