Tim Berne (born 1954) is an American jazz saxophone player and composer.

Though Berne was a music fan, he had no interest in playing a musical instrument until he was in college, when he purchased an alto saxophone. He was more interested in rhythm and blues music--Stax records releases and Aretha Franklin, especially--until he heard a recording by Julius Hemphill.

  • Stumbled upon him while searching for [artist]Erik Friedlander[/artist]-related stuff. His piece Insomnia really is a gathering of wonderful musicians as well as great ideas, straight from the mind and heart of those people. Incredible stuff.

I don't think there's ever been anyone in the history of jazz who's done so much groundbreaking music so consistently for such a long time. 30 years and still blowing minds, including my mind for the past 17. The man is an icon of quality, creativity and independence.
