Tanita Tikaram is a German-born, British-raised artist, born to a Malaysian mother and Indo-Fijian British army officer father. She is the sister of actor Ramon Tikaram and currently resides in London.

As a singer-songwriter, Tikaram scored her greatest hit to date with Twist in My Sobriety, from her debut album Ancient Heart in 1988, when she was 19 years of age. After two years she released her second album The Sweet Keeper, containing songs such as Sunset’s Arrived and Harm In Your Hands.

Other albums released by Tanita are: Everybody’s Angel, Eleven Kinds of Loneliness, Lovers in the City, Cappuccino Songs and Sentimental.

As of April 2009, Tanita is living in London, England, and is currently recording a new album. Tanita is also releasing free live versions of older songs on her blog. You can subscribe here: http://tanitatikaramblog.blogspot.com/feeds/posts/default

i don't know aly, twist in my sobriety is one of more obvious songs. ok, i don't meant that entirely but i've always found the lyrics fairly easy to compute. it's not about one specific thing, more a sprawling commentary on the modern world, fitting in to society and feeling completely, scarily detached from love and lovers. i get what you mean about the obscurity but i think, at least for ancient heart, it served her very very well. the awkwardness of the lyrics worked for her. but songs on other albums don't get off so well.

So, I love Tanita, but really, some of her lyrics (especially early in her career) were just... out there or not good. Like, they were too obscure to the point of sounding like words strung together. I think the French and Saunders "Star Test" sketch (on YouTube), with Dawn as Tanita, really sums it up well: "What does 'Twist in My Sobriety' mean?" "*looks down* I... don't know." And don't tell me it's because she was young! Laura Nyro wrote killer songs at 17!
