Phoenix, United States (1997 – present)

Soulfly is a metal band formed in 1997 in Phoenix, Arizona. Led by founder, frontman, songwriter and only constant member Brazilian Max Cavalera, who formed the band after he left influential Brazilian death/thrash band Sepultura in 1996. The band has released seven studio albums, one tour EP, several singles, and two DVD videos. Soulfly incorporates diverse heavy metal styles with Brazilian tribal and world music. The band has had all six of their studio albums debut on the United States Billboard 200, with a peak position at number 32 with their second album Primitive and their debut album, Soulfly, has been certified gold by the Recording Industry Association of America. All of the band’s output has been released by Roadrunner Records.

The band has gone through numerous line-up changes, but the line-up has been stable since 2004’s Prophecy. Their most recent album Omen was released in 2010.

Formation

Brazilian heavy metal songwriter, guitarist and singer Max Cavalera formed the band in 1997, following his split with Sepultura in 1996, and the death of his stepson Dana Wells. The lineup consisted of former Thorn and Nausea drummer Roy Mayorga from New York, guitarist Jackson Bandeira from Chico Science & Nação Zumbi, former Sepultura roadie Marcello Dias from The Mist on bass, and Cavalera on guitar and vocals.

By the way, why is Jumpdafuckup still the top track? It's the worst song Max ever recorded for fuck sake!! [2] Awful, Max made a couple of good tracks for that album but most of that and the first seem to consist of awful guest appearance songs...fucking Corey Taylor and Fred Durst...the one with Tom Araya is rubbish too...

His first three records = meant Soulfly's first 3 albums, not his first 3 records ever.

Should Max rejoin Sepultura we will see then what music he really wants to play when there's no one to influence him about playing heavier. Once again Roots is Sepultura's most known work by far so even though nu metal's dead nowadays and for the foreseeable future it will stay so he might still use the trusted formula that tells artists to make an album in simillar style to the most _commercially_ successful effort. BTW I think a Sepultura reunion album would be a mix of nu and groove metal songs with an occasional faster tempo song.

Well I think it would be best if Max went back to the Beneath the Remains sound completely, his Morbid Visions era hasn't got as many fans as his thrash era. I heard that Rizzo is responsible for the fact that Soulfly got heavier I think if it wasn't for him Max would still write Jumpdafuckup-like songs until this day and Cavalera Conspiracy would be a nu metal band, either that or a metalcore band you can hear metalcore influences on latest CC record and Soufly's Omen. So I think Max tries to show he's so hardcore now again with his Morbid Angel, Terrorizer, Death, Kreator shirts but I think the change in style for Soulfly is not sincere on Max's part and can only be attributed to Marc Rizzo and that he's a fan of pre-Roots era Sepultura. It would be very easy for Max to keep making another records like his first three especially since his most famous album is Roots, not Arise, not even Chaos A.D. People buy an artist's albums that resemble in style the artist's best work.

I thought some of their best material has come out of the Prophecy sessions up until now. Adding Marc Rizzo was such a beast move on Max's part and being able to get Nunez back into the bad just elevated them to another level. I love Dark Ages and it's weird because I feel that it flows best by listening to it as a whole. It has everything. I've haven't been let down by them yet so I've been waiting a couple years now for the slip up to happen. But Max has kept it consistent. I just don't want a straight death metal record.......

Of course you might think that they're good if you only keep playing your favourite songs off every record, but if you start to listen albums as whole, suddenly they don't appeal that much any longer...
