Biography

Silvia Tarozzi is a violinist, performer and improviser. Her research on sound and instrumental gestures, based on her own experiences as an improviser, finds expression in several collaborations with composers.
Since 2010 she has been working with the composer Pascale Criton on the microtonal violin composition « Circle Process », premiered at the Musique Action Festival in 2012 (Nancy, FR) and performed at many Festivals and venues: Biennale Venezia Musica, Ausland (Berlin, DE), Oslo10 (Basel, CH), Coutances Cathedral (FR), MaskFest (RSM), Logos Foundation (Ghent, BE), Le Consortium – Center for Contemporary Art (Dijon, FR), Angelica Festival (Bologna, IT), the RedCat (Los Angeles), Mills College (Oackland), CalArts ( Valencia), UCSB (Santa Barbara), Center for new Music (San Francisco).
In 2014 a new piece for violin and cello « Bothsways » was commissioned and premiered in the broadcast « Alla Breve » on the National Radio “France Musique”.

Since 2011 she has also worked regularly with the composer Éliane Radigue.

In May 2014 she released « Virgin Violin », a cd with compositions by Pauline Oliveros, Pascale Criton and Eliane Radigue for solo violin, produced by the Italian label “Dischi di Angelica” (Rer Megacorp distribution).

This recording received several positive reviews in specialized magazines like the Wire (UK), Circuit Revue (Canada), Avant-music News (US), Record Geijutsu (Japan), Nutida Musik (Sweden), among others.

She plays in duo with Italian cellist Deborah Walker, performing regularly at International venues and Festivals. They have premiered new works specially written for their duo by Eliane Radigue, “Occam River II”(2013), Pascale Criton, “Bothsways” (2014), Philip Corner, “Two Extremeizms”(2015) and “Wholy Trinitye” (2016) and Tim Parkinson, “Duet for Silvia and Deborah”(2015).
In 2018 the duo released “EXTREEMIZMS, early and late”, music by Philip Corner, featuring Rhodri Davies on harp and Corner on piano.

Silvia Tarozzi writes music for her own musical projects.

She plays violin with the french ensemble Dedalus, which has worked with many American and European composers (Christian Wolff, Alvin Lucier, Phill Niblock, Jürg Frey, Michael Pisaro, Jean-Luc Guionnet, Sébastien Roux etc.).

Since 2012, Silvia has coordinated the activities of the children’s choir “Piccolo Coro Angelico”. This musical project focuses on vocal research and experimentation. It is based at the Centre for Music Research – Teatro San Leonardo (Bologna – IT).
