Maple Leaf Rag (3:16)

Cover of Piano Rags

From Piano Rags and 163 other releases

“Maple Leaf Rag” is a multi-strain ragtime march with athletic bass lines and upbeat melodies. Each of the four parts features a recurring theme and a striding bass line with copious seventh chords.

Published in 1899, “Maple Leaf Rag” was not an immediate hit. It wasn’t until
1907 that two recorded versions of it sold a modest number of copies—one by the U.S. Marine Band and the other by Vess L. Ossman. Scott Joplin himself never recorded “Maple Leaf Rag” but did make a piano roll of it for player pianos in 1916, a year before his death.

Out of all songs written before 1955, “Maple Leaf Rag” went on to become one of the 100 songs that has been recorded by the most number of different artists.

Black & White images, movements which are way to fast, scratches coming and going, ending with all out of sync and burning the pelicule... Nice :-)

@tenpcrisps How the hell could he copy Thomas The Tank Engine when this came out in 1899 and Thomas came out in 1915.

The brilliance is in the way Scott allowed anyone who can read music, to make the happy noises for ALL to enjoy. Doesn't the tune just make your heart dance?? And he wrote a multitude of delightful RAGS! Peace..........

LastFM is up to its tricks again. Yes, I'm listening to Maple Leaf, but, no, this is not Joplin playing - it's a seemingly run-of-the-mill trad band (judgements like that are always a hostage to fortune)
